Tang Dynasty, 8th or 9th Century A.D. Possibly a Ming Dynasty or 18th or 19th Century Qing Dynasty Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 151 millimeters(6 inches) Breadth: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Thickness: 82 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. No repairs but the majority of glaze is gone. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any decorative item which was buried for over one thousand years. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Tang Dynasty statuary. Sancai. Or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 124 millimeters(5 inches) at top rim; 107 millimeters(4 1/3 inches) at belly; 64 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) at base. Height: 76 millimeters(3 inches) CONDITION: Excellent! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial. DETAIL: A splendid. Magnificent, and rare smaller-sized painted earthenware bowl. Completely intact, the worst blemishes are a few chips in the paint– hardly unexpected of a bowl of this age which spent a significant portion of its life buried! Apparently attributable to pre-dynastic China, these bowls are generally not recovered intact, typically they are found shattered into fragments(shards) However this particular specimen was found intact. It’s about the size of a large grapefruit, and as you can see, the painted design is mostly intact. What’s really remarkable is that it is that despite its age it is nonetheless entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little bumps and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. As well there are the normal blemishes(bumps, warts and acne pits) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware bowl) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. We are offering for sale a fascinating figure of a Chinese Tomb Warrier(Stickman) which dates to the Han Dynasty of ancient China(206 B.C. to 220 A.D. We acquired this piece in 1993 while living in China. This figure is in remarkably good condition considering its age of over 2100 years. It was recovered from one of the 24 known Yang Ling Mausoleum pits and dates to 108 B.C. This figure is of very high quality and to our knowledge has never been repaired or restored. The standing nude man has very prominent facial features and contains remnants of his orginal orange color paint. The figure's orginal wooden arms and fabric dress eroded away thousands of years ago leaving only the nude pottery figure with remnants of red and black pigment fron his clothing. This charming grey earthenware statue of a Chinese Zodiac rooster figure dates to the Six Dynasties Period(220-589AD) An era wracked by disunity, political instability and civil war. The piece depicts the animal posturing in guard of its surroundings. Looking quizzically or even nervously at whatever lurks behind it. Beautiful sweeping incisions are used to reflect its plumage. The rooster may have sat alone or possibly alongside other figures as part of a set of twelve depicting the other animals of the zodiac. It would have resided either in a domestic context or as part of a mingqi collection. Chinese legend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river. With the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. The rooster spotted a wooden raft and ... morehelped the monkey and the goat to cross with him, in return his companions cleared the reeds out of their path as they went. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. An ancient Chinese honey glazed pottery figure of a sleeping greyhound. Dating to the Tang Dynasty(618- 907 A.D. Hollow-moulded. The animal is depicted with its head resting by its paws, its tail curled up alongside the right haunch. The piece maintains an attractive honey glaze throughout. A symbol of fidelity. The dog is one of the twelve symbolic animals of the Daoist system of chronological designation. Both the snub-nosed mastiff and the long-nosed, long limbed greyhound are depicted in Chinese art as early as the Han Dynasty. Dating to approximately 500 B.C. We are not enough of experts to definitively say that is what this is. You can still see remnants of old red bands externally on the body and handle. If correctly identified that would place this piece to the Daunian II period(approximately 550-400 B.C. and is painted in so called"subgeometric" style. Daunia was a historical region in southern Italy about which little is known. Unlike the Apulian Greeks. The Daunian potters were, on the whole, more influenced by native Italic ceramic traditions.
