Sui-Tang Dynasty Painted Clay Statuette of a Man Performing Martial Arts. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. CLASSIFICATION: Painted Pottery Statuette. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Sui-Tang Dynasty, 7th Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 176 millimeters(7+ inches) Breadth: 125 millimeters(5 inches) Depth: 72 millimeters(2 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Head was broken off and reattached by our conservator. Virtually all of the paint has oxidized/decomposed. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any votive/funerary item which is 1.400 years old. Some encrusted dirt which could be gently brushed away with a toothbrush. Not flawless, ... morebut certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Sui-Tang Dynasty statuary. The statuette depicts a man performing a martial arts move. Something akin to contemporary“mushu” The roots of mushu martial arts extends back at least 4,000 years, and this statuette reflects that heritage. Once painted, it appears that the body was perhaps painted all white or principally white, as it seems that there remains some residual paint beneath the soil deposition layer. However most of the paint this statuette originally possessed has oxidized/decomposed. It does stand on its own, but precariously, you would want to give it some support or something to lean on, as otherwise it does topple easily. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. A wonderful ancient Peruvian Chimu culture effigy bottle. Dating to approximately 1100-1400 A.D. An attractive burnished bottle. Of globular form, with rounded base. A moulded figure of an ox sits in rest atop the bottle with a cylindrical spout emerging from the beast's back. The Chimu are primarily known for their distinctive black glazed pottery. Strongly influenced by their predecessors, the Moche. Examples of their enchanting ceramics can be found on display in the world's top museums. The Chimu ruled much of the coast around their capital of Chan Chan in northern Peru until conquered by the Inca in the fifteenth century. Ancient Peruvians left no written records, thus their material remains are the only existing link to this long gone and intriguing ancient people. Ancient Greek 400 BC Attic black glaze pottery feeding bottle- guttus Unbroken and unrestored. A very fine example in museum condition. Black glaze over red ochre. The pot has a single handle and long side-mounted spout. The main body is round with vertical. Incised ribs and with an incised star pattern under the handle. The handle spout and neck are not cracked and have not been restored in any way. There are some ancient sand and salt deposits around the base and spout and also under the lip. 8cm in height. The body is 5.5cm at it widest point. The glaze is a very bright. Uniform, gun metal black with hints of green. With Collectors label. This piece has been in the same collection in the UK for 70 years These pots may have been used either to fill lamps with oil or to feed liquids to infants. This type of pot has been found in infant graves. ... moreThis suggests that it is a baby’s feeding bottle. The black coating of'black-glaze' vessels is not actually glaze at all but a fine slip of the same clay that was used to form the body of the vase. From the mid-fifth century BC onwards many black-glaze vessels were decorated with stamped or incised designs before the black slip was applied. Usually the designs were floral or linear. But occasionally more ambitious figure scenes appear. Greek pottery. Unlike today's pottery, was only once fired, but that firing had three stages. After the pottery was stacked inside the kiln, the potter started the first stage. He heated the kiln up to around 800°C with all the vents open to let air in. This turned the painted pottery red. Once the kiln reached 800°C the vents were closed and the temperature was raised to 950°C and then allowed to drop back to 900°C. This turned the pottery all black. The potter then started the third and final phase by opening the vents and allowing the kiln to cool completely. This last phase left the slip black but turned the pottery back to red. Ancient Greek Pottery Lekythos 400 BC terracotta oil pot(relisted because the successful bidder did not pay) This Greek Lekythos was made in the late 4th century BC. Excellent condition. No cracks. Very small chips in the rim of the spout. Museum quality. It has a lattice pattern which is very similar to another Lekythos from the 4th Century BC which was sold from the Charterhouse School Museum. By strange co-incidence the collector of the item being auctioned attended Charterhouse school. A lekythos is a type of Greek pottery used for storing oil. Especially olive oil. It has a narrow body and one handle attached to the neck of the vessel. The lekythos was also used for anointing dead bodies of unmarried men and many lekythoi are found in tombs. It is 14cm high and the main part of the body measures 4.5cm at the widest point. The shoulder ... moreof the vessel is decorated with two concentric black rings. Painted in black. African Theme Old or Ancient Pottery
Offered is a very old or ya could call maybe ancient piece of pottery with all hand designed art including applied to pieces before fired. It is very elaborate and when I bought it from an antique mall. that tag said African theme. I guess it could be most any theme in art but a crude one for sure and probably has some meaning? It is rather large: 8" high and about 8" wide. Looks like red ware pottery with a glaze over the outside. A lot of ware around the outer bottom rim that proves it is a very old piece. Has a crack in the bottom and up one side STABLE. Listing best I know but found it worthy to list. could be a goodie. Emails welcome. This unusual figurine originates from Sri Lanka. And dates to the mediaeval period, C.1100-1400 AD. 6” 15cms) tall. It is a baboon, crudely modelled with particular attention to the expressive facial features of the animal. It is made of a heavy terracotta weighing 600gr, and is in reasonable condition for it’s age with a very old chip to the bottom rim on the back, and a more recent loss to the head(see photos) there are also several cracks, firing faults, and encrusted dirt. The belly of the animal appears to bear some sort of pinkish pigment(see the final photo) so this piece was probably originally painted. This piece was excavated in the 1950s in the Anuradhapura ... morearea(Anuradhapura was the site of Sri Lanka’s first capital city) but it post-dates the demise of the city, which happened around 1050 A.D. This piece stands perfectly well upright. But the new owner may want to mount it on a stand; it is a very rare and attractive primitive piece, unconditionally guaranteed to be of the date and origin specified. Delivery Insurance included.
