SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 200 millimeters(8 inches) Breadth: 61 millimeters(2 3/8 inches) Thickness: 49 millimeters(2 inches) Base: 51 x 49 millimeters(approximately 2 inches square) CONDITION: Exceptionally good! No major blemishes. Breakage, or repairs; however quite a number of modest chips. A little wear consistent with any funerary item which is over five(perhaps close to six) centuries in age including the customary little blemishes characteristic of handcrafted ancient porcelain. A little glaze crazing/crackling as is common with ancient porcelain. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation. A clay pottery ancient Chinese Zodiac ox figure. Dating to the Six Dynasties Period(220-589AD) This grey earthenware piece is a particularly charming and rare depiction. The sculpture captures the animal in strikingly abstract form. Lying down with its legs stretched out and head raised, as if watching over its surroundings, the ancient artist has captured a wonderfully lifelike snapshot. With the innocent hint of a smile, this robustly modelled piece has a rustic quality that seemingly transcends age or culture. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river. With the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. The cat and rat decided that the fastest way to cross the river was to hop on the back of the ox, being naive and good-natured, the ... moreox agreed to carry them both across. It is a bust of a woman or goddess, crudely modelled and wearing a necklace, ear-rings and an elaborate head-dress. It is made of a heavy terracotta, and is in reasonable condition for it’s age with a several cracks, firing faults, and encrusted dirt; the head-dress has also been re-attached. This piece was excavated in the 1950s in the Anuradhapura area(Anuradhapura was the site of Sri Lanka’s first capital city) but it probably post-dates the demise of the city, which happened around 1050 A.D. Roman pottery shards found in the Netherlands. Vechten, former castellum Fectio. Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it ... morewas the site of one of the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. Large Ancient Chinese Eastern Han Terracotta Pottery Rooster Figure - 9 AD
An ancient Chinese red earthenware figure of a rooster. Dating to the Eastern Han Dynasty, 9– 220 AD. This charming depiction portrays the animal standing attentively. Its head cocked to one side to reflect a quizzical, almost humourous nature. The body is naturalistically moulded; the wings tucked into the body and with confident sweeping incisions in the clay being used to reflect the plumage. The legs and feet stand out as somewhat bulkier than one might expect, this appears to be a common trait in Han depictions of birds and may have been an artistic choice on the part of the creator, or possibly it was to provide extra strength to the model. The rooster may have sat alone or possibly alongside other figures as part of a set of twelve depicting the other animals of the zodiac. It would have resided either in a domestic context or as part ... moreof a ming qi collection. Chinese legend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river. With the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. The rooster spotted a wooden raft and helped the monkey and the goat to cross with him, in return his companions cleared the reeds out of their path as they went. In Chinese tradition those born in the year of the rooster are seen as hard working and loyal with high moral standards, they are also considered to be natural leaders. This artefact has been formed in two pieces; a large open-mouthed container with a rounded base, placed into a shorter pedestal with a broad foot. A prominent flange conceals the seams where the two sections are joined. The surface of the vessel is covered with striking, animated motifs of incised linear and geometric patterns. Large Greek Canosan Bowl dated to the mid 3rd century BC. The Canosan bowl 11.3 cm high 20 cm wide has a pedestal base ring and is coated in original white ground white pigment. The outer rim in mainly pink pigments is decorated with a line and leaf design with the odd blue spot. Complete. Ancient Islamic Mamluk/ Ayyubid Ceramic pitcher 13th–14th Century Materials and techniques: Ceramic. Painted decoration Dimensions: H. 24 cm; W. 21 cm; diameter of opening 9 cm The distinctive feature of this pitcher is its brown. Freehand brushwork decoration on a cream ground. The artist has divided the outside into three levels separated from each other by a broad line. On the upper level, situated on the neck, he has drawn regular series of triangles and diamond-shapes which meet at their points. The second level, on the shoulder, is ornamented with a repeated motif of three parallel lines. The third and last level, the belly, is painted with irregular freehand triangles, bigger than those on the neck and pointing downwards. The granular clay used contains impurities which have been hidden with cream-coloured slip. Firing was done at ... moremedium temperature and in two stages: one for the clay and another for the paint. This pitcher was doubtless used in everyday life. Already known under the Byzantines and the Ummayads– although with differences in terms of technique and decoration– objects of this type were widespread during the Ayyubid and Mameluke periods.
