1607 OCCULT Ancient ORACLES Magic DREAMS Apocalyptic LATIN Greek FEMALE Prophets
with) ORACULA MAGICA ZOROASTRIS CUM SCHOLIIS PLETHONIS. with) ORACULA METRICA IOVIS. APOLLINIS, HECATIS OPSOPAEUS. Johannes. Paris: 1607. In this collection of three books on oracles. Published for the first time in 1599, Johannes Opsopaeus( 1556-1596) collected everything that had to do with these ancient female prophets; including their dreams. Interpretations and foretelling. The sibyls were the prophetesses of Greco-Roman antiquity. Whose utterances were in Greek hexameter verses, the authenticity of which was said to be assured by the presence of acrostics within. These women who prophesied the future under the inspiration of the deity often had inspiration manifest itself outwardly in distorted features. Foaming mouth and frantic gestures. The first book is composed of a direct commentary on these Sibylline Oracles. With the Latin translation ... moreof Sébastien Castellion; combined with a second work on the magical Oracles of Zoroaster, examining the writings of Plethon and Psellus; the final work studying the Oracles of Jupiter, Apollo, Hecate and other gods of antiquity. Text in the original Greek with Latin translations and commentary. The first work contains a striking engraved title page. Topped with the printer's trademark French ship, which also appears on the second title page. There are 12 engravings in the first work. Collates as follows: Engraved title, 14] prelims, 1-524, 1-71 Notes, 2]pgs, Oracula title leaf, 7-144 as issued, 1]114 Oracula vetera, 5] Index. All works complete. Leather binding, albeit original, is well worn with exposure and loss at the extremities, the front board detached with the spine, with raised bands, exhibiting brittleness, cracking and leather loss; the binding split at several points as well. Two sections in the first work loose. Engraved title with foot slightly excised, as shown; the remainder of the block in good shape, as shown. Page edges stained red. A valuable piece that can benefit from a rebind. Good luck! Measures 7.5" x 4.75" x 2.5"

This region had a long standing association with the classical western world as from the third century BC these areas were ruled by the Graeco-Bactrians, the successors of Alexander the Great's farthest flung kingdom. Settlers from the Greek world brought with them a multitude of influences including artistic traditions. Though the fortunes of the Bactrians waned, they ... moreleft a lasting aesthetic legacy upon the region they had once ruled. This carving was produced at a time when Gandhara's urban elite had developed a refined taste for foreign goods, as such Gandharan artists were using figures from classical Greek mythology to form the motifs for their work. This magnificent carving is a beautiful example of the hydridisation of both 2nd century Gandharan art and society. Condition: Unrestored. With minor fragments and abrasions. Exceptional Delicate Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Olpe - 340 BC
A stunning. Delicate and vibrant ancient Greek Apulian terracotta olpe, attributed to the Menzies Group and dating to approximately 340 B.C. This delicately potted. Finely painted olpe(wine jug) is of typical Apulian form; with a ringed base, piriform body, short neck and flaring mouth. An elaborate Herculean Knot embellishes the rear of the looped handle. The scene depicts a naked, winged Eros seated upon a rocky outcrop and gazing expectantly forward. He holds a phiale in his outstreched right hand, whilst his left hand rests behind. Tendrils and acanthus leaves adorn the field, with wave decoration on the outer lip and lined decoration bordering the upper part of the scene. This fine piece is attributed to the Menzies Group of painters. Produced by a series of individuals who were active in Apulia during the second half of the 4th century ... moreB.C. Thier primary medium were small scale ceramics such as olpes and skyphoi, and Eros was amongst the favoured subjects. According to Philostrates the Elder(3rd century AD) this particular scene alludes to a tale popular at the time: A boy and girl. Both beautiful and under the tutelage of the same teacher, burned with love for each other; and since they were not free to embrace each other, they determined to die at this very rock, and leaped into the sea in their first and last embrace. Eros seated upon the rock. Stretching out his hand toward the sea, is the painters symbolic suggestion of this tale. A beautiful and moving piece. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Height: 3 5/8 inches. Provenance: From a UK private collection. Dispersed as part of a deceased estate and originally purchased by an ancestor of the previous owner, who was a professor of archaeology. Acquired in the middle-early part of the 20th Century, with attractive old patina on the surface. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold.

Apollo is one of the most important and complex of the Olympian deities in ancient Greek and Roman religion. Greek and Roman mythology. And Greco– Roman Neopaganism. The ideal of the kouros(a beardless. Athletic youth) Apollo has been variously recognized as a god of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, healing, plague, music, ... morepoetry, and more. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto. And has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis. Apollo is known in Greek-influenced Etruscan mythology as Apulu. As the patron of Delphi( Pythian Apollo) Apollo was an oracular god—the prophetic deity of the Delphic Oracle. Medicine and healing are associated with Apollo. Whether through the god himself or mediated through his son Asclepius. Yet Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring ill-health and deadly plague. Amongst the god's custodial charges. Apollo became associated with dominion over colonists. And as the patron defender of herds and flocks. As the leader of the Muses( Apollon Musegetes) and director of their choir. Apollo functioned as the patron god of music and poetry. Hermes created the lyre for him. And the instrument became a common attribute of Apollo. Hymns sung to Apollo were called paeans. ANCIENT ROMAN GREEK ETRUSCAN POTTERY - BIRCH 1858 -2 VOLUMES with COLORED PLATES
History of Ancient Pottery” By Samuel Birch. Published in London by John Murray in 1858. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of what was the first comprehensive history of ancient pottery. Including Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Etruscan, and Egyptian work. Birch's work stood as the cornerstone of the literature on ancient ceramics for decades, and although now very dated, is still an interesting and informative study. In 1910. More than half a century after its first appearance, Solon wrote of it- It would be nothing short of presumption on our part to praise a work the immense value of which is acknowledged by all students of archaeology. All we can say is that, according to the opinion of the masters of the science, Birch's general history of ancient pottery has remained, up to this day, an unassailable ... moreauthority on most of the subjects that are treated by it. It condenses the substance of many volumes of difficult access and often still more difficult interpretation; all materials have been selected with judicious discrimination and classified with clearness and accuracy. DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes. 6"x9" 415& 437 pages, 12 color plates and hundreds of text illustrations. Bound in period dark green 3/4 leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spines with raised bands, separated into five compartments with gilt titles and ancient vase decorations. CONDITION NOTES: Covers with moderate scuffing and a little wear. Some light internal soil. Still a handsome set, with tight bindings. OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Our International shipping charges are based on the weight. DETAIL: There are ancient references to ... moreametrine from Persian. Roman, and Greek sources. Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest an ancient source of ametrine in India, and indeed ametrine was(re)discovered recently in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh near Hyderabad, an ancient city which was a trading center on the camel caravan route which crossed to Persia and Europe on one side, and China and Russia to the other side. There is also evidence of a medieval source of ametrine in Scotland, perhaps in the general vicinity of the Devonian lava beds in Angus, Scotland. However ametrine first became famous in the modern world in the seventeenth century when a Spanish conquistador received it as a dowry when he married a South American Indian princess. Ametrine was subsequently introduced to Europe through the conquistador's gifts to the Spanish queen. You can think of Ametrine as a gemstone quality quartz crystal which when growing up could not decide whether it wanted to be an Amethyst or a Citrine, and so developed a“split personality” This is a very large. Very clean, handcrafted faceted oval cut ametrine semi-precious gemstone which originated in Bolivia. Exported to Russia for use in indigenous jewelry, th

The Ancient Greek World 12 Silver Coin Collection
The earliest coins known are attributed to the Lydian’s in the 7th century B.C. By 600 B.C. the idea was adopted by the Ionian Greeks. To become the preeminent civilization in the western world. With the 4th century B.C. came the conquests of Alexander the Great. Which introduced the Greek culture, language, science. And coin designs to distant regions of Europe, Africa and Asia. Centuries later, long after the Greeks departed from many of these areas. The Greek cultural influence continued to inspire and influence the artistry, denominations, and manufacture methods of the indigenous coinages. The history of Ancient Greek coinage can be divided(along with most other Greek art forms) into four periods. The Archaic. The Classical. The Hellenistic and the Roman. The Archaic period extends from the introduction of coinage to the Greek world during the 7th century BC until the Persian Wars in about 480 BC. The Classical period then began. And lasted until the conquests of Alexander the Great in about 330 BC. Which began the Hellenistic period, extending until the Roman absorption of the Greek world in the 1st century BC. The Greek cities continued to produce their own coins for several more centuries under Roman rule. The coins produced during this period are called Roman provincial coins or Greek Imperial Coins. Ancient Greek coins of all four periods span over a period of more than ten centuries. Incuse square containing cruciform pattern with pellet at center. On the shores of the Propontis. Parion was founded circa 710 B.C. and became a flourishing port through the excellence of its harbor. In Greek mythology Medusa( Greek: Μέδουσα(Médousa) guardian, protectress" was a monster. A Gorgon. Generally described as having the face of a hideous human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Gazing directly upon her would turn onlookers to stone. Most sources describe her as the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto. Though the author Hyginus( Fabulae. 151) interposes a generation and gives Medusa another chthonic pair as parents. Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus. ... moreWho thereafter used her head as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. In classical antiquity the image of the head of Medusa appeared in the evil-averting device known as the Gorgoneion. Medusa in classical mythology Perseus with the Head of Medusa. By Benvenuto Cellini. Installed 1554. The three Gorgon sisters—Medusa. Stheno. And Euryale—were all children of the ancient marine deities Phorcys(or Phorkys) and his sister Ceto(or Keto) Chthonic monsters from an archaic world. Their genealogy is shared with other sisters. The Graeae. As in Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound. Which places both trinities of sisters far off"on Kisthene's dreadful plain" Near them their sisters three. The Gorgons, winged With snakes for hair— hated of mortal man— While ancient Greek vase-painters and relief carvers imagined Medusa and her sisters as beings born of monstrous form. Sculptors and vase-painters of the fifth century began to envisage her as being beautiful as well as terrifying. In an ode written in 490 BC Pindar already speaks of"fair-cheeked Medusa" In a late version of the Medusa myth. Related by the Roman poet Ovid( Metamorphoses 4
