One of a kind Ancient Greek Diplyon style, leather covered shield with scorpion
You are bidding on an a nice example of the early Ancient Greek Diplyon style shield. Museum Replica company offered this one years ago in their catalog. It is made of 3/4 inch almost and inch thick plywood. The shield came painted on the outer side and raw wood on the inside with the leather arm straps bolted on. The nuts and bolts that hold the leather straps onto the shield are not accurate but the way it was made. I took the shield which then cost close to 100 dollars or so and covered it with a nice 100 dollar leather elk skin hide. I drilled holes around the entire edge of the shield and hand sewed the hide to the shield with matching leather strap. Then I custom painted the black scorpion. A symbol of Ancient Greece, onto the front of the shield. I never used it for battle, just been on display. A genuine. Large and very rare ancient Graeco-Italic terracotta Olla, dating to approximately 550 B.C. This vessel shape is known as an Olla. Likely used either for cooking and storage or for funerary purposes. Of globular form. With flattened circular base, biconical body, flared mouth and with two hand protomes between a pair of looped handles. The body and mouth of the pot with linear bands and geometric decoration in redish-brown paint. This rare form of vessel dates to the Daunian IIB Subgeometric period(approx 550-500 B.C. When umber pigment began to be used in place of simple black. The Daunians were probably a native Italic people, who were influenced by neighboring ancient Greek ceramic styles. Removing it from the body would have even been more damaging than the initial impact. Rarely do the delicate details of a metal barb like this survive intact as shown in these pictures.
