A wood and gesso painted ancient Egyptian sarcophagus section. Dating to the 26th Dynasty(685- 525 BC) In a fine state of preservation and with a wonderful, quintessentially Egyptian depiction. The god Anubis is presented in his full jackal form. Reclining on a red couch and wearing a white collar. Behind the jackal stands a fan with a star. This symbol originally represented divine protection and was reserved only for kings, though by the Egyptian Late Period the motif had been appropriated by private individuals. The pigment across the entire piece remains vivid and evocative. The openings at the top and bottom of the artifact show where it would originally have slotted into the wider body of a sarcophagus. The panel is headed by a thick band of clearly preserved hieroglyphic text. A stunning and extremely rare ancient Egyptian painted wooden gesso ushabti dating to the New Kingdom(19th Dynasty) Likely produced in Thebes around 1250 B.C. Carved with a care and precision not often encountered, this piece has all the delicate poignancy one associates with small scale Egyptian sculpture- and is one of the finer examples we have handled. Of a pleasing. Slender appearance. Depicted in mummiform, arms crossed right over left on chest, each hand holding a hoe. The tripartite wig painted blue; the back and the lappets of the wig appear to be tied at the ends, indicated by red horizontal lines. A large wesekh collar. Completely covering the upper part of the body, is painted in yellow, red and black. The diminutive face has been carefully carved, the flesh is painted brown and the features are black, with the eyeballs a vivid ... morewhite. With remnants of the original linen wrappings preserved under the back of the wig and right elbow(as shown) Below the waist are a series of four horizontal panels are painted yellow and framed by thin red lines. They contain lines of inscription painted black. Which state that the owner was the"Lady of the House and Chantress of Amun. This beaded necklace which has been restrung and the Terracotta coloured beads were excavated in GUROB by Professor Flinders Petrie in 1889-1890. The"tube" type beads were stained blue. But a lot of the staining has worn off. Average length of each blue bead is 17mm. Some of the blue beads have been broken since they were restrung. The red beads look like they could well be Coral and are about 7mm long. All these beads came in a envelope with information about there history written on the front( photo 7) There is also a very small part of a letter by Flinders Petrie. An X-ray reveals an ancient metal pin that has been inserted thru the head and body to make the mummy for stable. The entire artifact measures 11 inches in length. Many species of animals were mummified in the later periods of Egyptian history. Some were considered sacred because they were believed to possess the spirit of the god or goddess. The falcon was identified from the earliest times with the sun god Horus. And the reigning King, who was considered the manifestation of Horus on Earth. Animals were sacrificed and mummified almost as elaborately as humans and offered in the temples by pilgrims. When a sufficient number of animal mummies had collected in the temple. Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom Wooden Ushabti / Shabti Figure - 1250 BC
A rare ancient Egyptian hand carved wooden ushabti dating to the New Kingdom. Around 1250 BC. With schematic features and traces of painted decoration, this is a large, genuine example. Of a pleasing. Slender appearance, the figure is depicted in mummiform, with the arms crossed over the chest. The tripartite wig painted in dark green, remnants of pigment also remain on the upper chest, possibly depicting a large wesekh collar which would have covered the upper part of the body. Worn by the passing of time. This piece has lost its fine detail and gained a striking visual sense of flowing, indistinct form that one associates with the linen wrapped mummies themselves. Hand carved wooden shabtis were of course far more costly and labour intensive than the standard mass produced pottery forms from this period. As such we can be sure this fascinating ... moreartefact was commissioned by an individual of substantial means. The shabti was a funerary figure. Placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased. This was important as all ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife if summoned. It thus became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place these figures in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. A spell was often written on the shabti so that it would awaken as planned, this is the'shabti spell' from chapter six of the Book of the Dead and reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis, Even as the man is bounden. Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet of SEKHMET in excavated uncleaned condition. Height 3.4cm x 2cm wide and 1.8cm deep, circa 1100-500 B.C. Intact and un-restored. A hole goes through one side to the other just below the ears. This is wearable with care and professional clean if preferred. Faience was made from a compound including a crushed quartz like material which was usually pushed into a mould, left to set, then fired which turned the material into a glass-like substance, coloured by adding a dye from a crushed blue flower found in Egypt. A superb Egyptian silver napkin ring. It is hallmarked with three marks including the Lotus flower mark. I would date it c1940-50’s. It has been beautifully engraved with Egyptian scenes of pyramids. A camel, Ancient Egyptians, and the Sphinx. It is in perfect condition being free from dings splits and repairs.
