Ancient Egyptian Wood Cosmetic Spoon New Kingdom
Measures 7.5 X 1.8 inches(19 cm X 4.6 cm) This is perhaps an ancient Egyptian wood cosmetic spoon in a female form. The spoon head has two fish carved on the bottom side and has triangular. Geometric decoration on the spoon rim. The stand on the back of the female form has geometric carvings. There are traces of paint and/or plaster in various locations as can be seen in the pictures. The arms seem to have been carved separately and attached. There are three letters or decoration below the breasts, perhaps the initials of a previous owner or some sort of ancient decoration that I am unfamiliar with. This comes from the collections of a great aunt who recently died at 106 years of age who formed her collections in the 1930s and 40s. There is the remote possibility that this is a 19th century reproduction, but I have no way to determine this ... moreand all the other items in her collections are ancient, as you may see from my other sales. Also, one of the color fold-outs in Volume I is in pieces(roughly split along the folds) and only about 95% intact. When he was young, Mr. Bauer had been a United States diplomat working in Cairo, before and during the period when King Farouk lost power in Egypt. He told me that one day, while he was near the"Great Pyramid" some excavation was taking place and he was able to obtain nearly ten small dishes that had been uncovered. Later, when he returned to the U.S.A, Mr. Bauer attempted to ascertain whether the vessels were truly of ancient fabrication. I have no idea what testing was involved, but he was told that these specimens were determined to be about four thousand years old and that they were described as offertory cups. LARGE 6" Ancient Egyptian Bronze Osiris Statue w inlaid eyes museum mount 700 BC
In spite of the fact that this very large Osiris fragment suffers from severe verdigris. In size it is quite impressive and retains much of it's original detailing! When complete the statue probably stood some eight and a half to nine inches tall. Today it measures about six and a quarter inches tall. Such a substantial size is not often seen out side of museum settings. The god stands in typical pose. That is. Mummiform as if prepared for burial. As we look at the god, we see his right hand holds a Shepard’s crook against the left shoulder. This hand& arm, cross over the left. The left hand, similarly posed, holds a decorated flail against the right shoulder. The crook symbolizes the pharaoh role of firmly guiding, yet gently caring for his people. The flail symbolizes is firm rule and authority over them. While at the same time, ... moreit symbolizing his intolerance for others who might challenge him, the Egyptian people, or the role of Egypt in the world. The god wears the Atef crown. That is. The white crown of Upper Egypt adorned with double ostrich plumes, one on either side. The feathers represent Maet, universal order and just stability. The top of the White crown(representing upper Egypt) probably had a now lost gold(plated) solar disk on the top end. On his brow, the(lower Egyptian) red spitting cobra of Pharaoh signifies his might and power. Together, all of it symbolizes the god's supreme and just rule over the two lands, and hereafter. When we examine the gods face. We notice something. The eyes. This once splendid piece still retains it's original(stone or shell) inlay-ed eyes! They probably can be made into jewelry but from my photo you can obviously see that they show signs of their age and many are not in quite as good of condition that they were 2000 years ago. They are made of a ceramic paste called"Faience" They were worn as jewelry by both men and wemon- especially poor people who couldent afford gemstones wore faience beads.
