Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. Superior reproduction of an Ancient Egyptian striding Pharaoh You are bidding on what I believe to be a reproduction of an ancient Egyptian striding Pharaoh. This(limestone? stone statue has the appearance of a New Kingdom. Early 19th Dynasty(c.1290- 1250 BC) sculpture, but likely dates back to the mid twentieth-century- possibly even to the grand tour(1840's) when tourists were sold these pieces as authentic. This pharaoh displays some extremely attractive features and is certainly hand shaped by a master craftsman. It would take days to mimic this quality. It would make a great study model or an impressive display piece and stands just over 13.75" tall, 17" on the museum quality marble base. An ancient Egyptian faience fish amulet with a long and fascinating provenance. Dating to the New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 1550– 664 BC. This charming little fish represents the bounty of the Nile. Its deep blue colour seems to mirror the waters of the river itself. As a staple food of the ancient Egyptians, the image of the fish was popular, this example would have been worn to ensure plentiful food in both this life, and the next.
