Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. A fascinating ancient Egyptian bronze shrew sarcophagus. Dating to the Late Period, 664– 332 BC. The sarcophagus is of typical rectangular open form. With a hollowed out lower section which would have contained the mummified shrew, carefully wrapped in linen. The upper side of the sarcophagus is modeled with a charming figure of the animal as it would have appeared in life, snout slightly upturned, ears pointed and long tail. The ancient Egyptians believed that their deities could appear on earth in animal form. As such, shrews played an important role in Egyptian cult practices, particularly during the later dynasties. They were considered an animal that came from the dark, and were often associated with the mongoose, an animal that would appear during the day. These two species may well have represented two faces(night and day, dark and ... morelight) of the same deity. Indeed, the Egyptians built many animal cemeteries along the Nile, which they often termed resting places of the Osiris God animal. Though animal burials were practiced throughout ancient Egyptian history. The organised production of animal mummies for sale and burial as votive objects began in the Late Period. The Hachette company issued a series of 110 Egyptian god figures that were available in the UK. Australia, and other countries, but are relatively hard to find in the US. When you do buy single figures from the UK, the postage adds considerably to their price. Now they are becoming collectable. I have a collection of 52 first quality figures that I am selling, as I was able to buy a separate complete set, so I am selling my doubles. The figures are up to 5 inches tall and hand painted resin. The detail is quite good. And the historical and archaeological accuracy impressive. The crowns, implements, and postures are copied from actual ancient Egyptian statues, reliefs, or paintings, and the proportions are accurate(unlike most contemporary tourist statues) This figure is Reshep(or Rechef) A war god with Syrian origins. Height: 4 7/8 inches ... moreNote: This is one of the original issue Hachette figures. But the quality of painting is not as good, so I have reduced the price. The ones for sale currently on Amazon are a"second printing, and seem to use the same molds, but the painting is not nearly as good. These originals all came to me from Canada, UK, or France, and the price reflects their scarcity and the shipping I paid to get them.
