I found this Guilford chipped flint axe after plowing a field on our farm in Washington County. Tennessee. It is made very similar to the 3/4 groove axes- it has a flat top where a wedge would be used to tighten the haft like the 3/4 groove axes use. This piece is made from patinated flint with very obvious flint knapping markings over its entirety including a large curved crescent for hafting- measures 6” x 4 1/2” at its widest points. I do not know where it came out of but the 4 panels are recessed and look like they used to hold glass or maybe religious pictures of some kind. It also looks like it may have been a piece that came off of something bigger as the corners show marks from long ago. Both sides have what appears to be some form of candle/torch holders actually built in to the piece.The piece is very heavy. Incredibly detailed all over and was hand carved. Age of wood, pattern of carving, and overall patina are all amazing and suggest piece is from another time period. Amazing to see in person. Ancient Chi-Rho Christogram Unknown Golden Artifact - Pendant? Armor Decoration?
I got this in a 1000 count uncleaned bag years ago. This was in a dirt clod and once the dirt was removed I noticed it had the chi ro. It has a hole so that means it probably hung from something or was attached to something. In my opinon I do not believe it was a coin that was modified. It looks like it was made specifically to display. It feels lighter than bronze and it looks like gold plating. I am not sure if it is gold plating but those areas only had dirt that once removed it looks as you see it. I did not clean the back to show the gold underneath. I have no way to date this as the coins in the 1000 count bag ranged from greeks to late 400-500 A.D. Perhaps this was worn or owned by a Senator. A gladiator, a legionnaire or even off a horse's barding. If it is gold I couldnt imagine it being owned by a peasant.
