ALABASTRON - GREEK POTTERY - FOUND IN MACEDONIA
An alabastron is a type of pottery used in the ancient world for holding oil. Especially perfume or massage oils. They originated around 12-11th century BC in ancient Egypt. As containers carved from alabaster– hence the name– but spread via ancient Greece to other parts of the classical world. Most types of alabastron have a narrow body with a rounded end. A narrow neck and a broad, splayed mouth. They were often left without handles. But some types were equipped with ear-shaped projections or lugs into which holes were punched. Strings were then put through these holes for easy mobility. This item belogs to the last described category of alabastrons. A genuine. Large and very rare ancient Graeco-Italic terracotta Olla, dating to approximately 550 B.C. This vessel shape is known as an Olla. Likely used either for cooking and storage or for funerary purposes. Of globular form. With flattened circular base, biconical body, flared mouth and with two hand protomes between a pair of looped handles. The body and mouth of the pot with linear bands and geometric decoration in redish-brown paint. This rare form of vessel dates to the Daunian IIB Subgeometric period(approx 550-500 B.C. When umber pigment began to be used in place of simple black. The Daunians were probably a native Italic people, who were influenced by neighboring ancient Greek ceramic styles. Classical Greek Votive Pottery Cow 450 B.C.
This is one of the largest and rarest examples of Classical Greek art that we have seen. Dating to around 450 BC this beautiful and large naturalistic pottery sculpture of a Cow would have once served in a Temple in ancient Greece as a Fertility Votive. She is shown with full udders and teats. Her tail raised. She has flared nostrils and her mouth is partly open, head turned to the right. A very large, naturalistic terracotta with pathos. The classical Greeks were expert sculptors with terracotta as well as stone and marble. This being a glaring example of their expertise. Lot artifacts ancient Roman pottery shards with reliefs and terra sigillata
Roman terra pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one ... moreof the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. Prominent breasts and necklace. She clutches an infant in her left arm, shown with bird-like features and grappling on to her chest. As well as inside the flared circular rim. This piece dates to the Daunian II period(approximately 550-400 B.C. and is painted in so called"subgeometric" style. The painter's name is on the plate. But I'm not sure of the spelling. I have done a lot of research on this plate, and I have only found one other plate painted by the same artist. With no creases, natural defects and no surface rub. It is placed on acid free board w/ archival protective closure. Included is a 8 1/2" vintage lekythos signed pottery vessel. Kaye marked on vase& handle. The signature on bottom of vase says"copy of museum white lekythos seated woman 460-450 B.C. signed Vasso in cursive. This is in good shape, with one small chiip area around vase bottom as shown, with no cracks, A couple of paint wear areas typical of an old piece.
