DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 288 pages. Publisher: Facts On File. Inc; 1996) ISBN: 0816030057. List Price $44.00] Long overshadowed by Greek mythology. Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. Dictionary of Roman Religion" answers questions, makes connections, and sets Roman religion in its full context as no other source does. An essential reference for students, researchers, and teachers, as well as those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel addition to the vast library on ancient Roman life. late HELLENISTIC era ANCIENT "GLASS AGATE" BEAD, circa 300 BC. 2,000 + years old
A smaller sized ancient"Glass-Agate" or"Ribbon-Mosaic" type glass bead from the eastern Mediterranean Sea region. Possibly Geek or even Egyptian in origin, dating from the late"Hellenistic era" of bead making, circa 400 to about 200 BC or possibly later for this type. The construction technique is explained nicely on page 56 of James W. Lankton's book"A Bead Timeline" In general terms the technique was believed to have been started as a method of replicating the(at the time) difficult to find colorful banded agate beads. Some bead scholars think that the glass beads eventually became so popular that they were more sought after than the original agates. T he condition is fairly good for a 2.000 year old bead, showing great age and wear overall, but still very solid with very minor chipping on one ... moreend, about 7 mm in diameter and 13 mm(1/2 inch) in length. A nice blue-green and yellow colored example of this type of ancient glass bead. Please check the dimensions. Most photographs have been enlarged, and may look larger than the size of the actual items. Colors may appear somewhat different in the viewer’s computer than the item is in person. 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false We welcome INTERNATIONAL SALES. If you have questions. Ancient Greek Hellenistic Canosan tanagra figure 300 BC
An exceptional. Extremely rare& beautiful example of Hellenistic Greek figural art. An ancient Greek Canosan terracotta female figure. Of Tanagra style, dating to approximately 300 B.C. The figure. Originally constructed in two-part mold and finished by hand in ancient times, is beautifully depicted in glorious Hellenistic style. She is shown veiled, cradling an infant in left arm, wearing long himation(gown) Which runs close to her body, the folds exquisitely rendered. Her right leg is bent at the knee. Moving forwards over her standing left. Her right foot is visible emerging from beneath her gown. One of the most spectacular figures of this type we have handled. Mother and child depictions are seldom found in Hellenistic figural art of this type. Ancient Greek Hellenistic Egyptian 300 B.C. 100 A.D. Medical Bronze Cupping Vessel Search A very Rare Ancient Greek-Hellenistic Egyptian circa. 300 B.C. 100 A.D. Bronze cupping vessel of compressed globular form with a short trumpet neck. Greek sikua Latin: cucurbitulae) Cupping was a popular Roman practice. Which aimed to draw poisonous substances and'vicious humours' from the body. A cup containing a piece of burning cloth was pressed onto the skin. The burning used up the oxygen in the air in the cup, producing a partial vacuum, which powerfully sucked the cup on to the body. Dry cupping was performed on unbroken skin; wet cupping covered a wound or deliberate incision, and drew out blood, pus and other body fluids. CONDITION: Broken with holes. As one would expect from an over 2000 year old artifact.Beautiful mottled green patina ... moreshowing its age and usage. MEASUREMENTS: Approximately: 8.3 cm. 3 1/4 in. Ancient Hellenistic RARE Massive Ring Depicting The Labors of Hercules 332–58 BC
About The Greek Jewelry Greek jewelry. Etruscan jewelry and other Italian jewelry made in the time between about 850 BC and about 500 BC(called the archaic period, was inspired and greatly influenced by Egyptian and Assyrian examples brought by Phoenician merchants who were crisscrossing the Mediterranean Sea by this time. The techniques remained basically the same as the earlier Egyptian and Assyrian styles though embossed or stamped plates of gold and silver became a predominant basic element. Granulation in gold continued and was developed in Etruria to a remarkable degree of delicate refinement. And a fine expression of the breadth of the artistic creations of this `Golden Age' Flowers and tassels were a common motif for gold chain necklaces, and hoop earrings held delicate filigree discs and rosettes. Such pieces are available to the modern day collector. During the Hellenistic Age(330-27 BC) After the conquests of Alexander the Great, rather opulent gold pieces with precious and semi-precious stones became popular. Greek jewellery design and manufacture was influenced by the"new" of Oriental influences of the conquered lands as well as a revival of interest in Egyptian themes and styles. Greek jewelry of the Hellenistic Age saw small gold workings fashioned into pendant vases. Little delicate winged victories, cupids, and doves becoming common motifs. At the same time, an important innovation into Greek jewelry manufacture was the introduction of quite large colored stones, especially garnets, as a center-piece of designs. This style was copied by the Romans, who
