These bricks were intended to help prevent the spread of T.B. around the turn of the 20th century. The brick has chipping around the edge and especially the lower left corner, and other wear like you would find on an old brick. 9" X 4.5" X 2.25" It would make a nice display or bookend for a collector of antique medical memorabilia! ANTIQUE BRICK FROM THE DUCK CREEK BRICK COMPANY DUCK CREEK.WISCONSIN VERY GOOD Accession Number: 7.1984.10 Published Date: 11/29/2006"Workers at an unidentified brickyard pose for the camera. Ca. 1900. After a fire in 1853 that gutted a large portion of Green Bay's downtown, and later, the 1871 Peshtigo fire that killed approximately 2000 people, the use of brick and stone in building became more common. Stone was locally available from"the Ledge" as well as from fields, Brick, however, was easier to obtain and useful for construction because much of the region had an underlay of suitable clay for bricks. Early manufacturing required the bricks to be made by hand. Fresh clay was thrown into a hole, soaked in water, and then shoveled into a pugmill where it was mixed with more water until it became smooth. As the clay was ... moremixed, it was also forced to the bottom of the pugmill and slowly squeezed through a small hole in the bottom of the box. It was then rolled in sand and pressed into a wooden mold. When the mold was filled with four to eight bricks it was emptied onto a board where the clay bricks air-dried for several weeks. Once dry thousands of bricks were placed in wood kilns where they were fired for more than a week. When the steam engine began to be used for brick making near the turn of the century, the availability of more sophisticated machinery allowed increased production. Unfortunately, as wood became less readily available, many of the smaller brickyards closed. Increased use of concrete block also provided competition for the brick industry in the 1920s. Hutton Bricks were used in building the original Yankee Stadium in 1923. I am not claiming this brick came from Yankee Stadium. I just know I found it in The Bronx. Juan Jacinto Jova(J J J) came from Cuba to New York City as a sugar broker, then moved up the Hudson River to. Where he had hoped to raise sugar cane. When that venture failed, he built a brick plant. Jova bought a large Greek revival granite mansion(Danskammer) from David Maitland Armstrong(who ran the ARROW Brick Co. then tore it down to get the clay on which it stood. The grand pillars that supported the veranda of the house now stand in the sculpture garden of the in Cornwall-on-Hudson. N.Y. This brick closely matches one of the 13 brick illustrations in"The Brickyard, The Legendary Bricks of Indy" thus it appears to be"of the type" used at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to pave the famous brickyard track used for the Indy 500 race. I cannot prove the origin of this particular brick, and it almost certainly came from one of many miles of city streets throughout the midwest and thus is in better condition than the mortar covered true speedway bricks. In a treaty with the New Haven settlers on December 11, 1683, reserved for himself and a dozen or more of his Indian followers that particular portion of land northeast of New Haven. From a Brick Collecting website BLOG I found this information: The area along the Raritan River was famous in the 1800's for its clay that was used for pottery and bricks. As well as many other products. By 1878, there were eight Raritan River brickyards turning out 54,000,000 bricks annually. The largest of these was the Sayre& Fisher works founded in 1850 by James Sayre of Newark, and Peter Fisher of New York. Soon, they owned 2,000 acres of prime clay beds in the vicinity, and the town changed its name from Wood's Landing(named after an earlier brick maker) to Sayreville. Sayre& Fisher continued to grow and expand its market. By 1913. They were turning out 178,000,000 ... morebricks per year!
