It wasnt realized until time for the first MAIN STREET PARADE how heavy the benches were for the workers to remove and set aside to make way for the parade. It only took the one time for the crew to realize this problem. So the heavy cast iron benches were put away and used for prototype for much lighter benches. This bench has provenance to it as you can see in the following information that is included. Here is what I know to be true: This Disney park bench came from the estate of Richard(Dick) Pfahler who was one of Walt Disney's earliest employees.You can look this info up) At the time of Richard's hire. Walt's studio was on Hyperion in Hollywood. Richard retired from Walt Disney Productions in 1974. Upon Dick's retirement. Disneyland presented him with 2 of these cast iron original benches. Upon Richards passing the Disneyland benches were left to his daughter Melinda Pfahler Schussele of Scottsdale Az. Who forwarded all this info to me to share in the listing. Melinda was also a long time employee of Disney as well. Melinda gave one of the benches to friends in California(where it still remains) when she moved to Arizona and this is the one she kept which I am listing. It has all original wood slats from 1955 and has been kept in very nice original condition. The bench measures at least 5 foot in length and is about 2.5 ft in width and weighs at least 500 lbs(just guessing) The bench will be on local pick up only or buyer can arrange shipping. Fresh from an upstate New York estate! This offering is for an antique cast iron bench or seat which would look great indoors or out! Picture it in a garden area or as a vanity bench. It is a single person bench seat and is solidly made of cast iron with a curved metal seating area. To each side are ornate cast iron pairs of winged lions- mythological creatures- facing each other. The seat has criss-crossed metal legs with metal flowers at the point of crossing. There are horizontal cross braces. The bench is NOT a folding bench. It was solidly riveted together with iron pegs and is quite heavy for it's size. The only bolted portions are the ornate sides which are attached from the underside with two slotted bolts. Here's a bench with plenty of peeling paint and patina. And plenty of provenance, too. This was purchased at Martha Stewart's barn sale in Westport, CT a very long time ago. We think it was in the late 1970s or early 1980s. If you admire the look of rusty patina and peeling paint, this bench will absolutely not disappoint. Just look at those photos. It is vintage. I don't know the year it was made. I am unable to find a makers mark under all that paint. It doesn't look like it had a back rest or sides, but we are not sure. It was purchased without them.
