Antique Early 1900's Cast Iron Bench Seat w Winged Lion Sides Garden or Vanity
Fresh from an upstate New York estate! This offering is for an antique cast iron bench or seat which would look great indoors or out! Picture it in a garden area or as a vanity bench. It is a single person bench seat and is solidly made of cast iron with a curved metal seating area. To each side are ornate cast iron pairs of winged lions- mythological creatures- facing each other. The seat has criss-crossed metal legs with metal flowers at the point of crossing. There are horizontal cross braces. The bench is NOT a folding bench. It was solidly riveted together with iron pegs and is quite heavy for it's size. The only bolted portions are the ornate sides which are attached from the underside with two slotted bolts. I have removed these(easy to put back) for more economical shipping. This bench was found with old white paint. I see goldtone ... moremetal peaking through on the paint. see paint wear in pics) I don't believe this"gold" to be brass as the metal holds a magnet- it may however. Here's a bench with plenty of peeling paint and patina. And plenty of provenance, too. This was purchased at Martha Stewart's barn sale in Westport, CT a very long time ago. We think it was in the late 1970s or early 1980s. If you admire the look of rusty patina and peeling paint, this bench will absolutely not disappoint. Just look at those photos. It is vintage. I don't know the year it was made. I am unable to find a makers mark under all that paint. It doesn't look like it had a back rest or sides, but we are not sure. It was purchased without them.
