This is a very nice, heavily and deeply hand carved, Chinese camphor or teak wood coffee table. The top of the table depicts life in rural China from years gone by. Beautifully, intricately carved images of men and women working in the fields and at home. There are oxen, grass huts(one with a child in the window watching his mother who is outside in the yard) and lush trees. The workmanship is superior to most anything I have ever seen. It has scratch marks and needed some TLC so I painted it using Annie Sloan Old White Chalk Paint. Waxed it with clear, then applied dark wax and once again with clear wax while buffing. It can easily be buffed again with a clear wax to remove more of the darker wax if desired. The more you do this. The more of the darker wax will fade. I like the Old World charm this solid table offers! I thought of adding more color to this piece however I decided to allow the carvings to be the center of attention. This antique table stand caught my eye. It is very uni que. I could not find what category to put it under. It is hand carved. Rough cut in some areas, like under the table top. Looks like a rooster/chicken bird of some sor t carved legs. Two of the screws look like the original. The other leg ha s a newer screw replaced in that one. I do not know the age. We are pleased to offer this lovely table. The table is solid Walnut wood with no veneer. It features very deeply carved details. Both on the legs and the top. The table or stand is a 3 legged design. The legs are turned wood with carved scrolls in raised relief. The table top is deeply notched around the perimeter in a"pinwheel" type pattern. The top surface displays superb carved details. There are raised scrolls, which match the pattern of the legs, around the inside perimeter. The center features a trio of carved, raised flowers with stems and leaves. These are inset on a recessed surface which is encircled with a raised wood border. The top has either hand scraped or router marks for further interest. The table is a true work of art and it is finely crafted. I do not know the age of the table. Under the top, the table is assembled ... morewith flat screws. The leg attachments have Phillips head screws. I don't know if these are replacements. The wood is thick and substantial. The table is quite sturdy. It is in very good condition with only a few minor scuffs/scrapes to the surface of the finish. These are not distracting and can be resolved. Gorgeous Antique wormy wood top FARM - style dining table with carved base.
Wow! HEAVY. Solid, with some carvings and the top is burly and fabulous. This table has been in the family for decades. Sadly, as the house it lived in got sold so must the table and other items. It was originally purchased from an antique dealer in Mexico. Came from a wealthy family home there. Begging for benches around it! Seats 12 or more easily. In having someone look at the wood I could not get a definite answer of the type. We are nearly certain it is not mesquite and it could be mahogany but birch is what the grain looks like a bit. Difficult to say. The table was purchased for much more than the asking price here and then had to be shipped. The table is in good condition. Cloudy spots in the images are from the flash of the camera. The table color is the darker pictures. I've included the lighter ones in order to see the table ... moredetails better. It has very intricate, detailed carvings of villagers in a mountain valley in ancient East Asia. It has some writing and may have an artist's signature on the table top. I think the writing is in a Chinese or Japanese language, but I'm no expert on these things. I am not sure of the material this is made of. It looks like wood but it's more dense and heavier than any normal wood. The lacquered parts on the top of the table are very smooth. I took a lot of pictures to try to show all of the many details but I'm afraid they won't do this justice! The two parts together weigh about 26 lbs together. My mom bought it a long time ago. I've recently moved and it's showing it's age. It needs to be restored by someone with some woodworking experience. Once of the little overhangs is loose and there are some parts of wood on the bottom that have started to wear off. The top surface itself is actually in great shape, and probably only needs some cleaning and polishing. Other than what the tag says, I know nothing about the table or it's origin. I do have a very rudimentary base that I built to hold the table.
