Antique Ancient Greek Terracotta Amphora Vase 2nd-3rd Century This is for an antique Ancient Greek terracotta amphora vase. Circa 2nd-3rd Century(100-300) Made of terracotta, the table-top size amphora is potted by hand, with a tall cylindrical curved neck, a bulbous body. Two loop handles, and a circular foot. The neck is slightly flared at the rim. With a curved lip, and is decorated around the sides with a concentric band of stippled decoration below two concentric bands. The body is also incised with concentric stippled decoration above two incised concentric bands. The amphora vase has two large carrying handles on opposite sides, which fit onto the neck and body. The interior of the neck has the remains of an integral pierced strainer. This amphora vase measures 24.8 cm in height and 15.3 cm in width. It weighs 1.010 grams. The condition ... moreis generally excellent, there are two small chips to the lip, and a chip to the integral strainer, there are no cracks, no other damage or repair, the terracotta has the patina of age, with a brownish orange hue. It is one of the masterpieces of the Athenian Exekias who together with the Amasis Painter. Pioneered the black-figure technique in the second half of the 6th century BC. Penthesileia, the Amazon Queen, brough her Amazon warriors to help the Trojans to defend their city, following the death of Hektor at the hands of Achilles. She too was killed by Achilles. Exekias chose to depict the moment when Achilles is on the point of killing Penthesileia. His face is masked and still protected by his helmet. A reproduction of this special piece that was sold through the Louvre is 8 1/2" in height and has some light wear A Caeretan is a type of. Belonging to the. Caeretan hydriai are a particularly colourful type of Greek vase painting. Their geographic origin is disputed by scholars. But in recent years the view that they were produced by two potter-painters who had emigrated from to in has gained ground. Based on their style. They were for the longest time considered as either or products. However. Added inscriptions in Ionic Greek support the hypothesis of immigration. The workshop only lasted for one generation. By now, about 40 vases of the style are known, all produced by the two masters and their assistants. None were discovered outside. The majority were excavated in Caere. After which site they were named by and. They are dated to ... morebetween about 530 and 510/500 BC. The have a height of 40 to 45 cm. Attached to the body are off-set widely swaying necks; the body itself features broad shoulders. Low ring-bases shaped like upturned chalices are attached at the bottom. The technical quality of the vases is rather low. Many are warped or show signs of bad firing. Additionally. Many have dints that must be derived from rough handling before firing. The painting of the body is separated in four zones: the shoulder, a figural and an ornamental zone on the belly, and a bottom area. Except the figural zone on the belly, all other areas bore ornamental decoration. Only a single piece with two figural zones on the belly is known.

The other has an ancient dressed woman carrying a pitcher with an ancient dressed gladiator approaching her. She is looking downward as if she is shy. The back is also adorned with a white design. Both are in excellent condition considering their age. They are not chipped or broken. One has some of the felt on the bottom to prevent the pitcher from slipping missing. This Greek Attic lekythos has a round base. Cylindrical body and tapering towards the foot. The tall narrow neck which broadens out into a thick wide rim and a strap handle, shoulder reserved with rays at the base of the neck. The body is decorated with brown figure of a man approaching a funerary stele, painted on a white background. White ground lekythoi were made almost solely for the cult of the dead, as their non-permanent white technique was appropriate for burial at the grave site. These funerary vessels would have most likely contained oil. Dates to approx 460 BC and is near perfect condition said for a reconstructed foot.
