TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Rare! Exceptionally Well Preserved. ... moreVery Large Medieval Song-Style Black& Rust Glazed Ceramic Bowl. Perfect as a Candy or Potpourri Dish for Work or Home. CLASSIFICATION: Black-Rust Glazed CeramicBowl(Precursor to“Oil Spot” or“Hare’s Fur” Bowls) ATTRIBUTION: In the style of Ancient China. Song Dynasty(906-1279 A.D. But Most Likely an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 195 millimeters(7 7/8 inches) at top lip; 65 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) at base. Height: 89 millimeters(3 5/8 inches) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved. There is one rim chip which was repaired by one of our conservators(visible as an unglazed spot along the rim) Normal tiny nicks and dings, all consistent with a ceramic utensil of this age, and the normal potting blemishes(glaze pits, etc. associated with hand production. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. Both the tea bowls, as well as larger sized bowls such as this are relatively rare. Both styles of tea bowls as well(oil spot” and“hare’s fur” are a very sought after variation of Song

Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 373 pages. Publisher: Penguin Books; 2003) ISBN: 0142003697. In 1508. Despite ... morestrong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter(though famed for his sculpture David) Michelangeo was reluctant to begin the massive project. Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling recounts the four extraordinary years Michelangelo spent laboring over the vast ceiling while the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. Battling against ill health, financial difficulties, domestic problems, the pope's impatience, and a bitter rivalry with the brilliant young painter Raphael, Michelangelo created scenes so beautiful that they are considered to be among the greatest masterpieces of all time. A panorama of illustrious figures converged around the creation of this magnificent work, from the great Dutch scholar Erasmus to the young Martin Luther. Ross King skillfully weaves them through his compelling historical narrative, offering uncommon insight into the intersection of art and history. CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished except VERY slight edge/corner wear and rubbing to the covers. Just the normal slight wear expected in a new book caused by the book being shelved next to others. VERY minimal wear consistent with new stock from an open-shelf book store. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Satisfaction guaranteed. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: King tells how Michelangelo Buonarroti. Known as a sculptor not as a painter, spent four years painting the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II while power politics and personal rivalries swirled around him. He was 33 when he was summoned back to Rome, from whi

RARE 19thC Antique Siberian Blue Purple Color Change Garnet Ancient Travel Gem
Antique Nineteenth Genuine Natural Handcrafted Third Carat Siberian Blue to Purple Color Change Semi-Precious Gemstone. Very Pronounced Color Change from Blue to Purple. CLASSIFICATION: Faceted Color-Change Garnet. ORIGIN: Siberia. Russia, 19th Century. Handcrafted in or near 19th Century Yekaterinburg, Russia. SIZE: Length: 4 1/2mm. Breadth: 3 1/2mm. Depth: 1 1/2mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.31 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ancient cultures including the Celts. Greeks, Hebrews, Persians and Romans highly valued garnet. Most ancient Mediterranean populations believed that garnet would be worn for protection when traveling, as garnet was believed to warn the wearer of approaching danger. They also believed that that a garnet could give ... moreits wearer guidance in the night, allowing them to see when others could not. The ancient Greeks believed it guarded children from drowning, and it was also thought to be a potent antidote against poisons. Often mistaken for alexandrite, and even more rare than alexandrite, here’s an exceptionally uncommon blue garnet whose color undergoes a dramatic change to an intensely saturated purple when moved from fluorescent(or natural) light to incandescent light. Both color modes. Whether blue or purple, are very rich, saturated hues…not at all pale or washed out. The color under fluorescent light can range from blue to blue-green, but under incandescent light the color is always an intense, dark purple. These fabulous color-change blue color change garnets have only been found in a few places in the world in very limited quantity. Once such find was late in the nineteenth century in Russia, and we managed to secure a small supply of these quite uncommon gemstones during a recent visit to Russia. Like alexandrite and likewise rare Siberian demantoid garnet, the gemstones tend to be small in size, but brilliant, sparkling, richly hued, and very rare. This particular gemstone

They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Ancient Cretan Large RARE Silver Ring Carved Symbol of Anchor 1500-1300 BC
About The Cretans Crete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilization. The Minoans. Tablets inscribed in Linear A have been found in numerous sites in Crete, and a few in the Aegean islands. The Minoans established themselves in many islands besides Ancient Crete: secure identifications of Minoan off-island sites include Kea, Kythera, Milos, Rhodes, and above all, Thera(Santorini) Archaeologists ever since Sir Arthur Evans have identified and uncovered the palace-complex at Knossos. The most famous Minoan site. Other palace sites in Crete such as Phaistos have uncovered magnificent stone-built, multi-story palaces containing drainage systems,5] and the queen had a bath and a flushing toilet. The expertise displayed in the hydraulic engineering was of a very high level. There were no defensive walls to the complexes. By the 16th ... morecentury BC pottery and other remains on the Greek mainland show that the Minoans had far-reaching contacts on the mainland. In the 16th century a major earthquake caused destruction on Crete and on Thera that was swiftly repaired. By about the 15th century BC a massive volcanic explosion known as the Minoan eruption blew the island of Thera apart. Casting more than four times the amount of ejecta as the explosion of Krakatoa and generating a tsunami in the enclosed Aegean that threw pumice up to 250 meters above sea level onto the slopes of Anaphi, 27 km to the east. Any fleet along the north shore of Crete was destroyed and John Chadwick suggests that the majority of Cretan fleets had kept the island secure from the Greek-speaking mainlanders. The sites, save Knossos, were destroyed by fires. Mycenaeans from the mainland took over Knossos, rebuilding some parts to suit them. They were in turn subsumed by a subsequent Dorian migration. About This Ring Crete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilization. The Minoans. Tablets inscribed in Linear A have b

ANCIENT TILE fragment Acropolis Parthenon Greece Rare
Back in 1965. While I was in the Navy, I had the opportunity to visit the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. As my companions and I were walking around the area we came upon a group of tourists and their guide. The guide was telling how the grounds in the area have been finely sifted many times to find anything other then pieces of the buildings. Any piece of pottery. Vase, or mural had surly been found by this time. As he finished his presentation I just happened to look down at the ground and there right in front of my shoe was this small green fragment. It stood out from all the other white pieces so I picked it up and took it as my souvenir. I certainly don't know if this from some rare artaffect. But I have enjoyed having it and just wondering what it belongs to. My time has now come to pass it on to someone else who may solve where it ... morebelongs or what it is Good luck.

Very Rare Persian Wars Ancient Greek Bronze Greave Armor - 500 BC
A very rare ancient Greek bronze greave section. Dating to the time of the Persian Wars, approximately 500- 475 BC. This fascinating and evocative artefact comes from a prominent private collection. This fascinating piece preserves a large proportion of the original greave. Which was perhaps broken in battle and/or dedicated in a shrine as an offering to a god following a military victory. Beaten from a single sheet of bronze, likely from the right leg and with perforations running along the perimeter for attachment of the original lining, now perished. Around 500 BC greaves started to imitate the anatomy of the lower leg. The greave was prised apart. Taking advantage of the natural springiness of the bronze, and was clipped onto the shin. Many vase paintings of this period clearly show a garter being worn underneath the bottom edge of the ... moregreave to prevent chafing in battle, this would have been stitched onto the greave through the perforations shown on this piece. This greave would have once been part of the assemblage of an ancient Greek hoplite. The archetypal spear-armed warrior, perhaps the most prevalent figure in our view of the Golden Age of Greek civilisation. Length: 9 ½ inches. Condition: Fragmentary as shown. Reattached at centre. Provenance: Ex. Axel Guttmann Collection. Guttmann was without doubt the most famous collector of ancient militaria in the modern era. Many of his pieces being published in several volumes by authors Hermann Born& Ursula Seidl. His collection was so rich that a Museum was created in Berlin to house his many objects. This piece is one of the finest from the Guttmann collection, and was exhibited in his Museum in Berlin, Germany in the 1990's. Please note: This is a genuine ancient Greek greave. Ancient Hellenistic Very Rare Ring With Portrait of Royalty 332-58 BC

Etruscan jewelry and other Italian jewelry made in the time between about 850 BC and about 500 BC(called the archaic period, was inspired and greatly influenced by Egyptian and Assyrian examples brought by Phoenician merchants who were crisscrossing the Mediterranean Sea by this time. This style was copied by the Romans, who
