Vintage W L Davey Corp Cast Iron/Brass Hand Well Water Pump Farm Tool Primitive
Vintage pump marked W. L. Davey Corp. Rockford. Ill. This pump measures 20" tall, the base is 9" x 4 1/2" and the handle is about 18 1/2" long. The top spout part is threaded and is 1" the other one 1/2 way down is also threaded and is 3/4" The body part is brass as well as some of the other fittings, the rest is cast iron. The handle moves freely, there are no cracks, welds or breaks in the cast iron. There are various cast#s on a few of the parts, see pictures for details. Hasn't been tested or used in years, might need new"guts" or would be great for garden decor. Ships USPS Standard(economy) or Priority w/$5.00 handling which includes tracking and insurance.

This is a working pump jack. It's operation runs smooth with no catch's to it. Youy can see in the picks that there are long arms that are attached. However those are not included as part of the auction. only because I really am not wanting to pack them with the pump jack. Windmill Water Pump, Challenge Co., Hand Lever, Cast Iron, Vintage, Farm, 1492
Used. Windmill or Hand Operated Water Pump Housing, Lever and other components. Manufactured by the Challenge Company in Batavia, Illinois, probably in the 1920's but I'm not sure of an exact date. Nice looking cast iron pump housing. Lever and pivot. Base would allow anchoring for display(I'll include a"dummy, not original equipment" sucker rod to help position handle, not pictured) or use these good components for repair parts! The numbers"1492" are cast into the lower part of housing. These might be a model number. Not sure. Challenge Co, Batavia ILL is also cast into the housing. The number"18" is cast into the lever, the letter"C" on the connecting link and the number"919" on the parting rod guide. The pump housing with the pivot casting on top, measures about 45-1/2" ... morein overall height and the base is about 10-1/4" diameter. The handle is about 39" long as shown in the picture. There is evidence of possibly factory"as manufactured" repairs on the spigot. You can see small rectangular pieces of what appear to be cast iron inserted in a couple of spots(see pictures) There is also an old"weld repair" to the housing. Just above the end of the CHALLENGE CO/BATAVIA ILL script(see picture) There is a small"notch" in the base edge and other nicks and dings from use. I don't see any other repairs or cracks but without putting water to it, I don't know for sure. There is a"cast line" on the side of the base of the top casting that looks like a crack but when examined from the inside/end, there is no crack and it is evident that it is"as cast" This IS NOT a complete working pump. Other components not included in this auction would be required to make this item function as intended. Shipping note; these items will ship by UPS in two boxes due to the total weight. The granddaughter told me it was in their kitchen until they got city water and electricity in the 1940s. It was covered in crud so I gently cleaned off most of the grime. The original Red paint is still in great shape with no signs of corrosion. It just needs some more gentle cleaning to preserve the painted finish. Some of the operating hardware is still attached but no gaskets of any kind survived. Would make a great decorator item or rehab project. I brushed some of the dirt off but have left this pump mostly as found. Ready for cleaning(or not) and another use. The bowl area does have quite a bit of water staining(a lot will clean up fairly easily) with" THE DEMING CO. SALEM. OHIO" and the number" 2" around the rim. Spout area also has water staining and spots. A great rustic ... morelook. There are two bolts on the base(used for mounting) which are stuck pretty tight. Will leave as is. Near the top of the handle is" C7" and on the bottom of the spout looks like" 14" May be more marks hidden somewhere. This is a heavy item and shipping is not cheap. Beautiful. GEM, pump cover with original paint decoration or stenciling and patent date of AUG. 25- 1908. I am not exactly sure about the last number in the year but it looks like an 8 to me. The inside dimensions of the cover opening are 13 1/2" by 5 1/2" The cover is in"as found" condition so it might look a lot better cleaned up but I prefer it just like this. Excellent condition. For sale is an impressively large and old hand water pump marked W& B Douglas and Patented 1842. The pump itself measures 29 1/2" tall by 12" deep(back of base to end of spout) and 19" wide(edge of left base to right end of handle) There is a 28 1/2" long pipe attached to the base of the pump. The pump is untested and there is light surface rust on the base. Handle, and handle support. We have not tried to remove the lower pipe. The pump is painted bright green, which we believe is not the original paint. In good antique condition: No breaks, cracks, or repairs. A genuine farm antique.
