4 Vintage Brass Post Office Box Doors, Corbin, Oro, Federal, 1950's, 60's,
This is for a lot of 4 vintage brass Post Office box doors. One is a Federal Equipment Co. door dated 1962. One is a Oro Mfg. Co. door dated 1958, one is a Corbin door dated 1957, and one is a Corbin door dated 1959. The doors are all complete with the locks and glass. The two doors at the top in the first photo have plexiglass painted black. The bottom two have real glass painted black. The combination lock on each door works good and the combinations are included. The doors are used and have normal wear. They all need some cleaning and polish to look really good. Each door measures approx. 5" high and almost 3 3/4" wide including the frame. I do not know and can not guarantee this is from a smoke free or pet free environment. Bid accordingly. Oak Post Office Box Door Bank, Vintage, Still Bank, Working Lock w/combination
I bought this back in April 1982. I was told the wood was from old church pews. It's nice quarter sawn oak. With nice beveling around the door. The back panel also appears to be oak, but I don't know for sure. I'll include the business card provided when I bought it. It measures 5-3/4" high, 4-1/2" deep and 4-1/4" wide. These were made during World War II in zinc because brass was needed by the military and its use was restricted. Zinc post office boxes were only made during WW II which makes them rare. Frames open and close easily. Two different sizes: three are small: 5" x 3 3/4" two are large: 6 1/4" x 5 1/2" Small box numbers: 683. 684, 694 Large box numbers: 725. 745. I know the story behind this bank. It comes from Kings. Illinois, Ogle county off hwy 64, where I lived and was neighbors with Harold and Bernetta Deshazo who ran the post office from their house. This was around 1996 when the population of this unincorporated community read about 250. The town hall was erected in 1910, but I'm not sure how old the door on this bank is. By the time I moved to Kings, the post office boxes were abandoned as the mailing system, it modernized, and delivery went to contemporary house mail boxes instead of through Harold's garage. He got to keep the mailbox doors, made them into banks himself, and sold them. I was lucky enough to be his next door neighbor and bought two. This is the smaller one which I'm willing to part with. Dimensions are about 7.5"l x 4.25"w x 5.5/8" h. It comes in ... moregood working condition with the combination that I wrote lightly in pencil years ago on the back upper left corner. A very beautiful, sentimental piece that I want to be enjoyed and valued and passed on to someone else, along with it's history I've given. Here's a wooden filing cabinet in good condition. Beautiful original finish(tiger oak perhaps? with brass pulls. All wood construction except for metal drawer bodies. There's a metal tag inside with a serial number and"USPO Dept" affixed to the interior of the cabinet. The body of the cabinet has some insect damage on the underside- floor is thin and has some holes in the corner as pictured. But it doesn't affect function. The cross braces for the glass plate are missing on one door and the glass is held in place with tape. There is an embossed eagle with rays radiating outward on the doors. POST OFFICE MAIL BOX DOORS RARE ZINC COLLECTOR SERIES Three zinc mail box doors; all are#1 doors(small ones) They are of era WWII; the 1940's. These rare mail box doors are wonderful for mail box coin banks or jewelry boxes! Zinc was used for making mail box doors only during World War II when all copper containing alloys. Bronze/brass, were restricted due to their need for making shell cartridges. Remember zinc pennies! Traditionally, mail box doors had been made from bronze/brass material. The doors are listed on page 189 of the Illustrated Guide of Post Office Lockbox Doors by Jane H. Ingram. 2nd Edition. They were manufactured by Keyless Lock. We believe that very few post offices were being built or expanded during the war. Because everybody was heavily involved with the war effort. But apparently, these doors were urgently needed ... moreby an American oil company preparing a community for Americans in the Middle East. New mail box doors were only available in zinc. We purchased these old doors from an oil company when one of their abandoned mail facilities was demolished in 1999. The original doors probably had windows made of real glass. But on these doors the glass windows were removed at some point and replaced with Plexiglas. Note that the clips on the one of the doors has been replaced by your seller with a hand made clip. There is some paint left by a careless painter. The lock combinations are provided for you. The pictures tell the whole story of what is involved with these doors. The doors are 5” high X 3 5/8” wide. And the locking mechanism works well on all. Those that have bought them in the past have been very happy with them. They are the Grecian design# 1 size and measure 3 5/8 X 5 inches. They are dated 1963 0n the back. They have been cleaned and polished and are ready to go onto your project right out of the box. It comes with a working lock and 4 keys. It has 8 sided beveled glass that has NO chips, the frame is not bent or broken. This door can be found on page 229 in Jane H. The door has a patent date of Feb. 25 1896(117 yrs old) stamped on the dust cover of the lock. The box is made of Cherry with Walnut drawer fronts and Walnut and Padauk inlays. This would make a nice gift for Father's Day. Mother's Day, Birthday, Anniversary, Postal Workers or for no reason at all. It has the original numbers on the door glass. But I could put new ones(up to 3) on for no cost. The drawers and bank bottom are felt lined to protect valuables. It measures 12" wide x 6.25" high x 6.5" deep. These doors are in superb condition considering that they are about 60 years old. The U.S. initials stand out nicely. This single dial#1 size door measures approximately 3.5 x 5 inches and is designed to mount on hinge pins attached to the post office box frame. These doors were originally made of brass. Due to war time materiel shortages these were re-manufactured in the 40s using a zinc alloy rather than brass. The light silvery color is a nice contrast to the standard brass doors. And should look very nice if used to make banks with a dark wood such as black walnut. What a great item for making banks. Small storage drawers, or just for use as a novelty. Antique Post Office Flying Eagle Combination Lock Bank
This is an Antique Post Office Flying Eagle Combination Lock Bank. The bank has an antique post office door and combination lock with a more contemporary wooden bank constructed for it. Most of the banks I found with similar or identical front were attributed to around the turn of the last century. I assume that is the case for this one as well but I found not marks on it and we do not know specifically when it was made. The bank is in working order and the combination will be provided in two ways: On a string-type price tag with abbreviated instructions on the back On a print out of an web page listing the steps to open a three number post office box combination lock. The combination will also be written on that sheet. And you will find the URL where the web page was located on the left side. The original box front has a nice American flying ... moreeagle with a sunburst pattern background. All in high relief. I do not know for sure what the metal is, but it is not ferrous metal. The more contemporary bank housing is beautifully made with dovetail joints. And nicely finished to show the beautiful grain of the wood. The wood appears to me to be black walnut, but it could possibly be mahogany. There is a 1 3/4" x 1/4" slot with rounded ends on top that should accomodate any size and type of coins and/or currency. The photos are closeups. Exclusive of the door. The bank is about 4 1/8" wide x 3 1/2" deep x 5 1/8" tall. We also have other banks in our ebay store. This bank would be a nice addition to any collection of antique and vintage banks! Condition: Operating Condition As noted. The bank is in working order. I opened and closed it at least eight times. I did find that it was a little temperamental on the last number. When you get to the last number, you need to turn the center key/ knob to the left while pulling. On some trials, the door popped right open. On other trials, I had to slightly rotate the knob back and forth(i.e. clockwise and counterclockwise) around the final position to get the

Made from 3/4" Arkansas red oak this bank is approximately 7" wide by 7 1/2" tall by 5 1/2" deep with a vintage size 2 bronze U S flying eagle Post Office box door. This door was manufactured circa 1906. The size of this bank gives you about twice the storage space as a number 1 size bank and something more collectible and unique at the same time.
