Vintage 1940s Green Steel Adjustable Louvered Vent for Double Hung Window
This is a Vintage Green Steel and Wood Framed Adjustable Louvered Vent/ Screen for a Double Hung Window. The information I received is that this piece is circa 1940s. And that looks about right to me as well. This seems to be a pretty unique, decorative, and utilitarian piece. I may have missed something but I was not able to find another like it on ebay. I would be especially great for use in a rustic vacation, fishing, or hunting cabin, adding a great vintage touch to the room. To use the vent. Simply slide the two sides to the width of your double hung window, raise the sash, and set it down on the vent frame to help ventilate the room. The vent adjusts horizontally to fit from about 21 1/4" to 36 1/2" wide. The height is 10 5/16" The total overall depth including the wood and the two metal panels where they overlap is about ... more1" and about 5/8" where they do not overlap including the wood frame, and each metal panel alone is about 1/4" deep. There is a little resistance when opening and closing but I think a little light household oil. Tefflon spray lubricant, or other lubrication method should improve the operation significantly. The issues I noted are: A fairly minor splotch of white paint the slightly wraps onto the edge as well. This is clearly seen in one or more photos. A triangular corner broken off the wood frame at one corner. And a long but minor crack a ways below that, the extent of each marked with purple arrows on a closeup photo The paint. The latch is a smooth metal with a cast ornate pattern and takes two wood screws(not included) The'catch' looks more like a hammered steel or iron with a similar but different pattern along the outside edge that would show. It also takes 2 wood screws(not included) The latch works nicely and fits the catch like they were made together, but I do not think they began life together. All parts were copper-plated and surprisingly, the parts retained the majority of their plating. The amount of plating varies from part to part; see the last 2 photos to compare. Antique window locks require you to turn their lever both clockwise and counter clockwise to lock and unlock the window. Andersen added a spring to their design to facilitate the unlocking process. Instead of having to grab the lever and turn it clockwise to unlock the window. ... moreJust a simple push will trigger the spring inside the lock to turn the lever back and unlock the window automatically. I don't think that it's such a difficult process to turn the lever clockwise to unlock; I think that Andersen was just trying to be innovative to get an edge on their competition. One of the problems with springs is that they break over time, and the locks are rendered to operating just like any other lock, without a spring. Of the 8 locks that are available for purchase, only 3 still have their springs intact. The other 5 will require you to lock and unlock, manually, just like any other old window lock. The catches are unused and the finish is in fair condition with some checking and slight rust especially underneath. Vintage Estimate 1900"s I got these from an old church all are in excellent condition I cleaned up one with a wire brush took me two minutes. In old sash windows a pulley and weight system was used to assist in lifting and lowering the window. A cotton cord was attached to teach side of the window sash over the pulley and then tied to a steel or lead weight that moved up and down with the window to balance the weight. And was originally brass plated. Much of the plating wore off over the years leaving them with a nice, distressed finish. 50s Gunnison Steel Fixed Window 12 lights w hinged 6 light center panel screen
Post-war- late 40s to early 1950s- 12 light steel fixed windows with hinged center 2 x 3 panel and 2 x 3 light removable screen from Gunnison Homes. A subsidiary of US Steel. Each window has 12 fixed panes of glass in the steel frame. The center 2 wide x 3 high section of panes and frame is hinged and latched and can be pushed open(outward) Each window has its own removable screen that goes INSIDE the house and fits over the hinged portio. Each screen has its own sliding panel that lets you reach the handle open and close the window. Photo 1 shows window without screen and photo 2 shows window with screen. The window measures 37 1/2" wide x 39 1/2" high and each weighs about 70-90 pounds. There are a total of 5 available. A few panes of glass may be broken on individual windows. These were in use up to 2009 in a house built in 1949 ... moreand have been stored in conditioned space. All in working condition but they need to be cleaned. Some rust and paint on frames and screens. Photo 3 is a reference photo of a 1950 US Steel/ Gunnison catalog showing the"Deluxe" model home. Which is the exact house style these windows came out of. Photos 4-5 shows window installed. It is unfinished/unpained steel on the interior and has gray paint(old) on the exterior. Last picture has a storm(not included) installed over. Photos 6-8 show the measurements. Photos 9 and 10 show the window with the screen attachment and screen window. Opened and closed. Photos 11 and 12 show the windows with the center panel open. These windows would make a nice window for an outdoor garden room. A garden shed or three season porch or other project where you are trying to get an industrial look.
