Ancient Greek 400 BC Attic black glaze pottery feeding bottle- guttus Unbroken and unrestored. A very fine example in museum condition. Black glaze over red ochre. The pot has a single handle and long side-mounted spout. The main body is round with vertical. Incised ribs and with an incised star pattern under the handle. The handle spout and neck are not cracked and have not been restored in any way. There are some ancient sand and salt deposits around the base and spout and also under the lip. 8cm in height. The body is 5.5cm at it widest point. The glaze is a very bright. Uniform, gun metal black with hints of green. With Collectors label. This piece has been in the same collection in the UK for 70 years These pots may have been used either to fill lamps with oil or to feed liquids to infants. This type of pot has been found in infant graves. ... moreThis suggests that it is a baby’s feeding bottle. The black coating of'black-glaze' vessels is not actually glaze at all but a fine slip of the same clay that was used to form the body of the vase. From the mid-fifth century BC onwards many black-glaze vessels were decorated with stamped or incised designs before the black slip was applied. Usually the designs were floral or linear. But occasionally more ambitious figure scenes appear. Greek pottery. Unlike today's pottery, was only once fired, but that firing had three stages. After the pottery was stacked inside the kiln, the potter started the first stage. He heated the kiln up to around 800°C with all the vents open to let air in. This turned the painted pottery red. Once the kiln reached 800°C the vents were closed and the temperature was raised to 950°C and then allowed to drop back to 900°C. This turned the pottery all black. The potter then started the third and final phase by opening the vents and allowing the kiln to cool completely. This last phase left the slip black but turned the pottery back to red. This happened because when the clay received air, it turned red, but when the

Ref: 0055/ bc2ad Description: A black glazed guttus with tall spout and looped handle. Thin lines cut into the shoulder. Probably to emulate the ribbed shoulders of more expensively made vessels. Clearly an error occured during manufacture causing one side of moulded duscuss to slightly sink back into the body. Condition: Intact. Some minor encrustation. No repairs or restoration.
