A long feather lost in the back of his hair stretches towards gravity also finished in a turquoise patina. He wears a bone breastplate which was a popular chest ornament or armor. Rare Ancient Greek Marble/Alabaster Bowl. C.500 BC or Earlier Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Ancient Greek Marble/Alabaster Bowl. C.500 BC or Earlier This is a superb ancient Hellenistic marble bowl. Likely made in classical Greece or one of it’s colonies around the Mediterranean. Sometime before around 400 B.C. 6" wide by 3" tall and weighing 556 gr(just over 1lb) It is in a mastoid(or mammatus) shape. Named for its resemblance to a breast. For marble. It is also a very thin walled vessel a t less than 1cm thick. There is an obvious repair to the rim where a section has been broken and re-stuck. And the piece has also been very professionally restored from 5 large pieces. There are some mineral deposits to the surface, and 8 small to very small chips around the rim. The photos have all been taken with the same lighting. But ... morefrom different angles, which shows the translucent nature and structure of the material. Please here for an assessment of this piece: This does say to take the bowl to the British Museum for verification– but the Antiques Roadshow is in my area on 27 th June. Of which only the front part remains, was dedicated to Athena ca 490-480BC and is now in the Akropolis Museum in Athens. The horse would have stood alone, without a rider and was a symbol of victory in a race for horses alone. Details: horse front Condition: New. Made in Greece. ANCIENT GREEK PRESS PAPIER WITH COINS OF CRETAN MINOAN SHIELD IN MARBLE- 5643
Press Papier With Coins Of Cretan Minoan Shield in Marble Base Size: 5x5 cm Weight: 480gr Material: MARBLE-BRONZE Color: GOLD Description: The Minoan civilization was a Bronze Age civilization that arose on the island of Crete and flourished from approximately the 27th century to the 15th century BC.It was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the work of British archaeologist Arthur Evans. Will Durant referred to it as"the first link in the European chain. The early inhabitants of Crete settled as early as 128.000 BC, during the Middle Paleolithic age.It was not until 5000 BC that the first signs of advanced agriculture appeared, marking the beginning of civilization. The Minoan culture was established by the 27th century BC. Though the vision created by Arthur Evans of a pax Minoica. A"Minoan peace" has ... morebeen criticised in recent years,it is generally assumed there was little internal armed conflict in Minoan Crete itself, until the following Mycenaean period. As with much of Minoan Crete, however, it is hard to draw any obvious conclusions from the evidence. New excavations sustain scholarly interest and document the culture's influence around the Aegean. Despite having found ruined watchtowers and fortification walls.Evans argued that there was little evidence for ancient Minoan fortifications. But as S. Alexiou has pointed out(in Kretologia 8) a number of sites, especially Early and Middle Minoan sites such as Aghia Photia, are built on hilltops or are otherwise fortified. As Lucia Nixon said, we may have been over-influenced by the lack of what we might think of as solid fortifications to assess the archaeological evidence properly. As in so many other instances, we may not have been looking for evidence in the right places, and therefore we may not end with a correct assessment of the Minoans and their ability to avoid war. Chester Starr points out in"Minoan Flower Lovers" Hagg-Marinatos eds. Minoan Thalassocracy) that Shang China and the Maya both had unforti

Ancient Greek Press Papier With Spartan Shield Of 300 King Leonidas- Set of 3 Pieces Dimensions: 5x5 cm each 1.96x1.96 in Material: MARBLE-BRONZE Color: BRONZE. GOLD AND SILVER Description: Sparta(Doric Greek: Σπάρτα. Spártā; Attic Greek: Σπάρτη, Spártē) or Lacedaemon(Λακεδαίμων, Lakedaímōn) was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, situated on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. It emerged as a political entity around the 10th century BC, when the invading Dorians subjugated the local, non-Dorian population. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece. Given its military pre-eminence. Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars. Between 431 and 404 BC, Sparta was the principal enemy of ... moreAthens during the Peloponnesian War, from which it emerged victorious, though at great cost. Sparta's defeat by Thebes in the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC ended Sparta's prominent role in Greece. However, it maintained its political independence until the Roman conquest of Greece in 146 BC. It then underwent a long period of decline, especially in the Middle Ages, when many Spartans moved to live in Mystras. Modern Sparta is the capital of the Greek regional unit of Laconia and a center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives. Sparta was unique in ancient Greece for its social system and constitution. Which completely focused on military training and excellence. Its inhabitants were classified as Spartiates(Spartan citizens, who enjoyed full rights) Mothakes(non-Spartan free men raised as Spartans) Perioikoi(freedmen) and Helots(state-owned serfs, enslaved non-Spartan local population) Spartiates underwent the rigorous agoge training and education regimen, and Spartan phalanges were widely considered to be among the best in battle. Spartan women enjoyed considerably more rights and equality to men than elsewhere in the classical world. Sparta was the subject
Antique Grand Tour Bronze of a Roman Emperor/Greek Thinker on a Marble Base
A nicely detailed bronze statue designed to be sold to tourists during their Grand Tours of Europe during the later part of the 19th century—so obviously they could go home to damp climes and proudly show off their knowledge and taste. Height is about 6 inches including the stone base which measures about 3 1/4 inches square. Cruddy old polish residues that from a distance(like about a mile) resemble age wear. Stone base also looks antiquiee as if it was pried from the Forum or Colosseum. It was about as real as the Colored Wide Screen Hollywood versions of Ancient Roman. Gore Vidal. Btw was hired to write the screen play for Ben Hur—that horribly bad novel by the ex Union War Hero Lew Wallace who eventually crawled back to Indiana to await his rapture into the bosom of Christ—which never came soon enough. Anyhow, the novel was such a howler ... morethat Gore was stunned senseless—wandering out to the via via ventio where he was hit by an Italian lad on a Vespa delivering pizzas. Gore never fully recovered, although he did ask the Pizza boy to move back to Beverly Hills with him, and went to make a series of nasty snide snipes against Charles Heston hinting that Chuck had all the dramatic acting talent of a piece of plywood.
