Ancient Greek Cypriot Bronze Age Rat Tailed Long Spear - 1200 BC
A large. Rare and well preserved ancient Cypriot Late Bronze Age “rat’s tail” spearhead, dating to approximately 1200 BC. This formidable weapon is characteristic of those produced on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus during the Late Bronze Age. Characterised by a long blade. Prominent central midrib and distinctive curled tang(rat’s tail) Dating to around the time of the Trojan Wars. These impressive weapons were regarded as status symbols by the Bronze Age Cypriots, and would only have been possessed by the elites of society. It is not hard to understand why a weapon of such harmonised splendour yet imposing power would have been so highly regarded, indeed numerous examples have been found in Bronze Age warrior tombs, attributed to wealthy individuals of rank. This piece dates to a period of tumultuous change and collapse in the eastern ... moreMediterranean. A period where warrior groups spread across the seas, invading and devastating many societies, including Cyprus. A vivid insight into this worsening situation comes from a telling letter from the king of Cyprus(Alashiya) to king Hammurabi of Ugarit(1191– 1182 BC) the Cypriot ruler gives advice: “You say to me that ‘the enemy shipping has been sighted at sea.’ Well now. If that is true then be firm, what of your troops, your chariots, where are they stationed? Fortify your towns, bring the warriors and chariots into them and wait for the enemy with stern heart.” The reply. Probably never sent, is desperate: “The enemy ships are already here. They have set fire to my towns and done great damage to my country…The country is abandoned.” This fascinating and formidable Bronze Age weapon is a suitable vestige from an age of anarchy. For a similar example now with the Harvard University Museum. Length: 9 ¾ inches. Condition: Very good. With encrustation and an attractive malachite patina. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Please note: This is a genuine Bronze Age weapon. Offered for sale without reserve to promote our extensive inventory o
Ancient Iron Age Greek Cypriot White Painted Ware Terracotta Plate - 700 BC
An ancient Cypriot Iron Age white painted ware terracotta plate. Dating to approximately 700- 400 BC. With a gently sloping form. Shallow walls and sitting upon a ring base. The piece decorated with a cream slip and concentric rings of black paint covering the interior, this distinctive decoration allows us to date the vessel to the later phases of the Cypriot Iron Age. The unique geographic location of Cyprus at the crossroads of seafaring trade in the eastern Mediterranean made it an important centre for trade and commerce. By the time this wonderful vessel was potted. Cyprus had established contacts with civilisations across the classical world, including the ancient centres of the Near East, Egypt, and southern Anatolia. Diameter: 6 inches. Condition: Good. With restoration to the centre of the dish as shown. Otherwise excellent. Provenance: ... moreEx. British private collection. RARE ANCIENT GREEK CYPRIOT HELLENISTIC PERIOD PERFUME SPINDLE BOTTLE - 300 BC
RARE ANCIENT GREEK CYPRIOT HELLENISTIC PERIOD PERFUME SPINDLE BOTTLE- 300 BC Description: A perfect Ancient Greek Cypriot Hellenistic perfume spindle bottle dating to circa 300 bc Authentic ancient Greek- Hellenistic period. Terracotta spindle bottle- perfume flask. The body tapering to a wide. Flat foot, the neck tubular with well-formed lip rim Possibly imported from Rhodes in Ancient times. Additional information: We have already mentioned Pasikrates. The last king of Kourion, who assisted Alexander the Great at the decisive siege of Tyre in 332 BC. Like the other Cypriot kings, he was allowed to rule as a vassal of the new Great King for a time but was almost certainly drawn into the conflicts between the successors of Alexander, which resulted in the destruction of all the local dynasties of Cyprus. The city continued to mint its own ... morebronze coinage until late in the reign of Alexander, though now the issues depicted the head of the new Great King on one side, with the club and bow of Herakles on the other. By 294 BC. The island was firmly confirmed as a Ptolemaic possession ruled from Egypt, for which it functioned as a strategic naval base and a major source of raw materials such as copper and timber(especially for shipbuilding) The formerly independent city-kingdoms were ruled by military governors, and the political activities of the local élites, some of whom were newcomers arriving with the Macedonian conquerors, restricted to purely local matters. Nonetheless, the existence of a boule or council mentioned in inscriptions suggests some degree of local autonomy, while the elaborate architecture and contents of numerous tombs of this period(see below) suggests the continued economic prosperity of the town. Evidence from stamps on amphora handles suggests that the town engaged in a lively trade with other parts of the island and with Egypt. Few buildings survive from this period because of destruction by later structures. But a small theatre was constructed on the acropolis in the second century BC,
