Bronze sculpture measuring 38.5cm high. Mounted on a solid marble base that measures 17.5cm x 13.75cm. Signed after Myron. The Diskobolus of Myron is ... morea Greek sculpture that was completed towards the end of the Severe period. Circa 460-450 BC. The original Greek bronze is lost but the work is known through numerous Roman copies, both full-scale ones in marble, which was cheaper than bronze, such as the first to be recovered, the Palombara Discopolus, or smaller scaled versions in bronze. A discus thrower is depicted about to release his throw: by sheer intelligence" Kenneth Clark observed in The Nude, Myron has created the enduring pattern of athletic energy. He has taken a moment of action so transitory that students of athletics still debate if it is feasible, and he has given it the completeness of a cameo. The moment thus captured in the statue is an example of rhythmos, harmony and balance. Myron is often credited with being the first sculptor to master this style. Naturally, as always in Greek athletics, the Discobolus is completely nude. His pose is said to be unnatural to a human, and today considered a rather inefficient way to throw the discus. Also there is very little emotion shown in the discus thrower's face, and"to a modern eye, it may seem that Myron's desire for perfection has made him suppress too rigorously the sense of strain in the individual muscles, Clark observes. The other trademark of Myron embodied in this sculpture is how well the body is proportioned, the symmetria. The potential energy expressed in this sculpture's tightly-wound pose. Expressing the moment of stasis just before the release, is an example of the advancement of Classical sculpture from Archaic. The torso shows no muscular strain, however, even though the limbs are outflung. Ancient Greek Attic Black Figure Pottery Lekythos Calydonian Boar Scene - 450 BC
A beautiful ancient Greek Attic black figure Lekythos. Dating to approximately 450- 420 BC. Dating to the golden age of the Athenian civilisation, this stunning piece depicts one of the most popular myths of the ancient Greek world. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a disc base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The piece is decorated with a dramatic scene; a powerful boar is confronted by two soldiers on horseback, positioned either side as they hurl spears at the beast, a third figure on foot bends down to wrestle with the frantic animal. The shoulder of the vessel decorated with exuberant rays and dots. It is likely this vivid scene depicts the hunt of the Calydonian Boar. One of the monsters of Greek mythology that had to be overcome by heroes of the Olympian Age. Sent by Artemis ... moreto ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia because its king failed to honour her in his rites to the gods, the boar was killed in the Calydonian Hunt, in which many heroes took part. Like the quest for the Golden Fleece or the Trojan War that took place the following generation, the Calydonian Hunt is one of the most prominent of the Greek myths, and offered a natural subject for ancient artists. Ancient Etruscan Bronze Hercle / Hercules Statue - 450 BC
An ancient Etruscan bronze figure of Hercules or Hercle. Dating to 450– 300 BC. In this relatively unusual scene. We see Hercle depicted nude, modelled with the hint of a smile and brandishing his gnarled olive club ready to strike downwards. The tentacle wrapped around his leg would appear to be that of the Lernaean Hydra, the great serpent monster he had been sent to defeat, a seemingly impossible task given that each time it lost a head, the creature grew two more in its place. We are presented with only a hint of the animal creeping up his leg, and are left to imagine the great beast, its many heads hissing at its assailant. The tale of Hercules was known far and wide throughout the ancient world; every man. Woman and child knew of his story, his cunning, strength and bravery. Nowhere was his legacy more keenly felt than in ancient Etruria, ... morewhere Hercules legend grew into a cult of Hercle, a local god who was represented in expressive statuettes such as this. By dedicating these bronze figures, the ancient citizens of Etruria hoped to emulate his achievements, perhaps in hope of an immortal existence themselves. An attractive piece of Etruscan art. Displaying the elongated, almost vulgar style associated with works of the period. Etruscan bronzes are amongst the most celebrated of the ancient world, and have influenced a number of artists such as Alberto Giacometti. Condition: Very good. Left arm and right leg now lost. Unrestored and exhibiting a beautiful olive green patina. Mounted to a bespoke bronze and ebony stand. Height: 4 ⅞ inches. Height mounted: 7 inches. Provenance: Ex. London collection.
