PRE COLUMBIAN POTTERY WHISTLE ECUADOR AUTHENTIC This is a large authentic Pre Columbian pottery. Terra cotta, whistle/ ocarina from ecuador. Jamacoaque ... morefrom a private collection dating 350 B C- 1200 A D. This is not a reprodution. The front has a human head on what sems to be the front of a jaguar with paw feet. It tapers to a rounded point and has a handle. The face has excellent detail with deep set eyes with brow ridges, earrings, very prominent nose ring and an open mouth with pointed teeth. The teeth give it a rather frightening appearance no doubt intentional. The nose is not damaged but obscured by the thick nose ring that hangs down onto the top lip. The head with a headdress and side lappets. There is a hole at the back end and one in back of the head. The body is clear but I believe there is still debris in the head as IT WILL NOT TWEET. I did not want to try to dislodge debris and damage the holes. It measures 4 1/2 inches long and approx 4 1/4 inches high and rests on two paw feet. Clay color is a buff color not quite as dark as in the photos. I am saying Jamacoaque but it was in with Jamacoaque and also La Tolita fragments and I am not an expert. It is in very good condition with some chips to the side lappets that are not evident from the front but I have the damage pictured. I see evidence of an old repair or restoration on the front legs as there is a thin line that extends over to the back(see photos) However. I do not see evidence of a clean break all around and I do not see any type of glue in the lines. The clay color is very consisent and the restoration or repair was done a long time ago in Ecuador and not by the private collector who brought them back years ago. There seems to be no evidence of trying to hide the breaks unless they were cracks and the piece was not broken or separated. Other pieces in the collection had repairs and evidence of glue and some of these are in my other listings. I have close up photos of the lines or breaks that i have darkened a bit in the photos to show

Ancient Greek Apulian Daunian Pottery Kyathos Vessel - 350 BC
An ancient native Italic Daunian polychrome painted Anthropomorphic Kyathos. Dating to approximately 350 B.C. A highly decorated and imaginative ceramic. The handle of which has been stylized into an Anthropomorphic plank figure, with two eyes, a nose, headdress and a long cape. The vase is wide and heavy, with short neck and flaring lip. Concentric bands decorate the piece circumferentially, with cross hatch and other geometric decoration adorning the vessel. Daunia is a region of Puglia in Southern Italy. In ancient times this region developed a distinctive ceramic art. Influenced by the neighbouring Greek colonies but unique in style. This is a particularly fine and well preserved example of Daunian pottery and displays the imagination of the Daunian coroplastic artists, who delighted in incorporating abstract figures into their vases. ... moreMaximum Height: 9 inches. Condition: Intact and unrestored. An original firing crack to the base of the idol figure. A phenomenon that is common with ceramics of this type. A small surface chip at the upper lip, does not detract from the piece. Provenance: Ex British private collection. Ex London Art market. Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Lekythos Ritual Drinking Scene - 350 BC
An ancient Greek red figure lekythos(oil flask) vessel with beautiful painted decoration of a festival scene. Dating to around 350– 300 BC. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The painted decoration depicts a youth shown nude, wearing only a ring of charms from his shoulder, kneeling and raising a ritual wine cup( skyphos) Swirling tendrils border the scene. The shape. Style and subject of this beautiful vessel reflect strong Attic influence. Attic wares with scenes of children have long been thought to have been connected with the Anthesteria celebration, an Athenian festival held in late February in honour of Dionysus. The Anthesteria was an important festival to celebrate the maturing of the wine, which was opened on the first day ... moreand then consumed during various rituals. Amongst these was a drinking contest organised for the young boys, adorned with charms(as shown on this vessel) who drank from small jugs specially presented to them for the occasion. Though we are presented with a scene redolent with the vibrancy of ancient Greek life. It is poignant that lekythos vessels such as this piece were used to anoint the dead prior to burial and are often found in funerary contexts. As such. This vessel and the scene it depicts have a somewhat haunting presence, reflecting both the joys and fleeting nature of life itself. Height: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Ancient Greek Black Ware Pottery Pyxis Lid Ostracon - 350 BC
A fascinating and rare ancient Greek black ware pyxis lid. Inscribed with Greek writing, possibly used as an Ostracon. Dating to approximately 350 BC. From the early 5th Century. These sherds were known as Ostraca from which the modern term, ostracize' is derived. This artefact is the lid of a pyxis. An ancient Greek type of cosmetic box. The underside has been incised, possibly with the name of a powerful politician from the period. A truly fascinating piece. A ... morevery personal remnant of early democracy. Diameter: 3 3/4 inches. Intact Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Ceramic Pottery Kylix Wine Cup - 350 BC
A beautiful. Intact and unrestored ancient Greek Apulian kylix, originating from a prominent private collection and dating to 350- 300 BC. The kylix is of typical elegant form. The shallow dish with footed base and two ribbon-like looped handles. The decoration on the outer dish, painted in red-brown, depicts a laurel wreath, whilst the inside also features a wreath, the tondo at the centre with a palmette. The kylix is one of the most elegant ancient Greek ceramic shapes. Used for drinking wine as it could be held comfortably in one hand, used in the well-known game kottabos, which involved the drunken guests at a symposia flinging the remains of their wine at a specified target, whilst holding the kylix with the index finger through a loop handle. If the thrower hit the target whilst uttering the name of his desired partner, he would be ... morea successful lover. A rare unrestored example with a genuine provenance. A fine piece. Handle to handle diameter: 8 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection. Frankfurt, Germany. A prominent collector of ancient ceramics, rather than focusing on one particular culture Mr. Lohrey went after only the best examples from across antiquity. Buying throughout the 1980’s– 1990’s, with his keen eye Lohrey formed one of the leading German collections of its type. Please note: This is a genuine ancient Greek artefact.
