This is a working pump jack. It's operation runs smooth with no catch's to it. Youy can see in the picks that there are long arms that are attached. However those are not included as part of the auction. only because I really am not wanting to pack them with the pump jack. Winner can have them as well if he likes but there will be a additional shipping cost that will be added but will be ship in a different box. Windmill Water Pump, Challenge Co., Hand Lever, Cast Iron, Vintage, Farm, 1492
Used. Windmill or Hand Operated Water Pump Housing, Lever and other components. Manufactured by the Challenge Company in Batavia, Illinois, probably in the 1920's but I'm not sure of an exact date. Nice looking cast iron pump housing. Lever and pivot. Base would allow anchoring for display(I'll include a"dummy, not original equipment" sucker rod to help position handle, not pictured) or use these good components for repair parts! The numbers"1492" are cast into the lower part of housing. These might be a model number. Not sure. Challenge Co, Batavia ILL is also cast into the housing. The number"18" is cast into the lever, the letter"C" on the connecting link and the number"919" on the parting rod guide. The pump housing with the pivot casting on top, measures about 45-1/2" ... morein overall height and the base is about 10-1/4" diameter. The handle is about 39" long as shown in the picture. There is evidence of possibly factory"as manufactured" repairs on the spigot. You can see small rectangular pieces of what appear to be cast iron inserted in a couple of spots(see pictures) There is also an old"weld repair" to the housing. Just above the end of the CHALLENGE CO/BATAVIA ILL script(see picture) There is a small"notch" in the base edge and other nicks and dings from use. I don't see any other repairs or cracks but without putting water to it, I don't know for sure. There is a"cast line" on the side of the base of the top casting that looks like a crack but when examined from the inside/end, there is no crack and it is evident that it is"as cast" This IS NOT a complete working pump. It is marked“A.J. Dean Co. Minneapolis. It also has a“35 2P” on it. It measures approximately 62-63 inches high. It appears to have a couple of different layers of paint ... moreon the red parts. It also comes with a water conductor cup. Marked“65. It has a long brass pipe attached to it; the pipe has a very dark patina. The cup looks like it was possibly welded at one time. There is a crack on the faucet of the pump that can be seen in the photos. I believe it could be welded or replaced. This would make a great garden decoration. Beautiful. GEM, pump cover with original paint decoration or stenciling and patent date of AUG. 25- 1908. I am not exactly sure about the last number in the year but it looks like an 8 to me. The inside dimensions of the cover opening are 13 1/2" by 5 1/2" The cover is in"as found" condition so it might look a lot better cleaned up but I prefer it just like this. Excellent condition. I was going to part this out. But decided to keep it together for a while in case someone wants a complete unit for their pump and hit miss combo. This a Baker Monitor brand pump jack with wooden jack rods and spring loaded quick connect plate with a beautiful"Monitor" script. It is a more modern pump jack with large fluid reservoir. It spins super nice and the gears are in good shape. The axle shafts leak pretty bad though and I didn't pull this apart to see if there are any sort of seals in there that can be replaced. This one is heavy! It's got the flat belt pulley and the brackets for mounting to your pump. Vintage Dayton Mfg. Co. Water Well Pump, Early Electric, Hit Miss, Windmill,
This is a very early electric well pump made by THE DAYTON PUMP MFG CO. It is obviously missing the motor(would mount on top) I took it apart and cleaned out the gear box and oiled the gears. There was no rust at all inside. Everything turns easy and all bronze bearings are good and tight. All oil ports are clear and work as they should. I tried to show the action of the pump in the last six pictures. It's 31 1/2" tall and weighs 123 pounds. This would be cool to use with a hit and miss motor or a windmill. Local pick up only.
