ANTIQUE VICTORIAN 24" WIDE WROUGHT IRON GARDEN GATE & GOTHIC CAST IRON POST
Antique hinged garden fence with single post attached. overall width is 35" The post has a total height of 45" two 7 1/2" long spikes that would be stuck into the ground or cement and a 37 1/2" tall post with Victorian Gothic styling. The gate is 24" wide and 33" tall from end to end of the center. The hinge between gate and post is 3" wide and allows the gate to swing both ways. There is a stabilizing bar that helped to keep the post upright but the end is broken off and many years ago. Someone put an ornate Eastlake doorknob on the top of the gate handle. One of the cast rosettes on the upright iron post is partially missing. There is a coat of rust over a pitted iron surface but gate and post are well-made, solid and still functional. This might be just the perfect gate to transition to a backyard from ... morea narrow sideyard. Victorian 6 star spike wrought iron garden chain Gwydir castle Llanrwst 32ft
Five heavy lengths of matching Victorian spiked wrought iron garden chain with 6 point cast iron stars. Original from the pathway to the front door of Gwydir Castle in Llanrwst. I bought these myself from the sale there in 1982 along with many other items. I have no use for these now so first time on the market since. Superb quality that would be hard to match today 4 lengths of Aprox 6”8 inches and one 6ft section but this has been cut at some time can easily put back together. The chains are very heavy quality wrought iron links with cast iron spikes(6 point stars 3.25 inches across) every 8 inches these have various losses to the end of some of the spikes. The links are Aprox 2 inches across. Weight Aprox 40Kg. Four of the lengths have been painted black in the past and the six foot section unpainted. Condition as photos will last another ... morefew hundred years. Collection from Lymington Hampshire SO41. Or will have to be sent in two boxes due to weight. In the Victorian age. Child mortality rate was ... morequite high. When a wealthier family had a child die, they quite often buried the child right on their property. The child would often be buried without headstone and have a fence erected around the area and turn the somber area into a small garden, so the child would continue to bring joy, long after the sorrow passed. Normally those gated cemetery gardens would be short ornate wrought iron fences. Thus making us think that that is what this is. Awhile ago from the same general area this came from we had another much like this with the same type of ornamentation. That was signed by a local blacksmith, John J. Comerford, thus the attribution. We ended up with two sections, this is the first of those two. The overall piece has 5 spear top spikes topped and four sections topped with a decorative Fleur de Lis cap as well as the two end bars. It does have the standard issues any 130 year old outside iron fence would have. It has a fair amount of oxidation. Some bends, old paint in several colors, BUT what an amazing fence section.
