VERY COOL VINTAGE TERRA COTTA FISHIN BOY/LAWN JOCKEY
Neat old terra cotta fishin boy. He is vintage and possibly older. Heavy and not cheaply made. I've seen these in chalk. Cement, this is the only one I've personally seen made from terra cotta. Has been painted several times. There is a repair where hands are see photo. It is an old and good one, can tell by residue inside. Also a slight crack on bottom. Nothing loose or jiggly. I put little stick in mouth and fishin pole he did not come with this. Certainly not new so please take advantage of zoom or enlarge feature and study all photos thoroughly. 11" tall x 5 1/2" deep X 7" long. Weight 4lb. Pretty nice old piece of Americana. VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION! Large Cast Iron. Not cement or molded plastic black lawn jockey. One hand is extended to hold a lantern or a ring to hitch a horse. This style is called"Jocko" or the"Faithfull Groomsman" and it's legend states that they were originally ordered made by retired President George Washington to commemorate Jocko Gaines. An African-American who died guarding General Washington's horses before the Battle of Trenton. I just read that these statues were used to mark locations of the Underground Railroad. Today. The replicas are made of cement or polycast plastic. Only a guess, but I think this statue is at least 60- 70 years old, it may be much older. Jocko The Faithful Groomsman Lawn Jockey I am selling this'Jocko' The Faithful Groomsman statue. Which was purchased by my grandparents in the late 1930s. It stood outside. Though always cleaned and"Simonized' In the early 70s was repainted. And from 1977 on, was in- doors in an air conditioned environment. This is truly a fine example of Black Americana history. The only deterioration of this piece is slight surface rust at some of the seams as you can see in the photographs. All of the seams are closed and tight with the only ex- ception being the right hand. As shown. These statues are controversial. And always will be. Though there are many negative connotations associated with this piece. Below is one positive, from legend, that I would like to think to be true. However. Some accounts of the figure's origin cause ... moresome to see the statue as representing a hero of African American history and culture. According to the the figure originated in commemoration of heroic dedication to duty: It is said that the'lawn jockey' actually has its roots in the tale of one Jocko Graves. An African-American youth who served with at the time that he crossed the Delaware to carry out his surprise attack on forces at. The General thought him too young to take along on such a dangerous attack. So left him on the side to tend to the horses and to keep a light on the bank for their return. So the story goes. The boy, faithful to his post and his orders, froze to death on the river bank during the night, the lantern still in his hand. The General was so much moved by the boy's devotion to his duty that he had a statue sculpted and cast of him, holding the lantern, and had it installed at his estate. This statue is solid and very heavy. It weighs probably close to 100 lbs. It measures approx. 44" tall by 25" at the widest from the elbow to end of other arm. He stands flat on his square base. This is wired for electric if you decide to add a lantern but the wire seems like its cut pretty close near the end of the arm. The base wire extends out a couple inches. You can see both in the pictures. You might want to have an electrician replace the wire. You could always have just a metal ring which would be suitable for hitching a horse. There are no large cracks. Chips, or major damage noted. There are hairline cracks all over consistent with age and use. The ... morepaint is worn in different areas.
