They are unopened, with their 1940's graphics intact. The packaging states: An Individual Hothouse for Every Plant. Their purpose was to protect against frost, rain, and insects; allowing for earlier planting. The graphics are in good vintage condition, and would display well. There's some loss of green paper on the closing tab, under the cut here line. The way it occurs, it blends in well with the paper caps. I am selling this strictly, as vintage advertising, for display. Especially, since it would display so well. Due to their age, I am unsure if the covers, would work. They show some wear on the edges, and they have tears. I hesitate to be the one to ... moreopen them. The bottom opening is approx. 11" across. Antique Vtg William Johnson Newark NJ Garden Dibble Planting Tool- 9" Cast Iron
Antique hand tool for bulb planting. Made by William Johnson, Newark NJ. It's seen a lot of use and has a vintage patina, but it is in good functional condition. The underside of the handle has some scratches on it, as shown in photo 4, and there's a slight gap between the two sections of the handle(photos 4 and 5) but it's very very tight and even trying as hard as I can, they're not moving. Because of that gap, it appears as though some dirt got inside the handle. I can hear it rattling when I shake it hard, and I was able to get some of it out, but there's still some in there. Vintage garden - L&NER planting spade
L&NER planting spade C1925. English. No makers marks. Length overall 360. Blade is 145 long and measures 84 to 60. Handle is 125 long. The spade. Complete with handle tang is stamped from a single piece of steel plate approx 6mm thick- the blade has been taper forged in thickness towards the tip. The nicely shaped handle is turned from ash and is fitted with a heavy steel ferrule. The handle is retained on the tapered tang by being rivetted through a washer on the end. Cleaned and polished sympathetically to retain its original character. A very good looking tool- well used but not abused- great patina. Around the garden and on the farm these tools were used for setting out seedling plants- a larger version of the familiar garden trowel. I presume these were issued to station masters to encourage the planting and maintenance of flower ... morebeds on platforms and gardens adjoining the railway line. An early tool being stamped L&NER- the& was dropped very soon in the life of the LNER. A rare collectors piece.
