I am offerning this beautiful antique Cast Iron Horse Head Fence Topper or Hitching Post. When I purchased this I was told it dated between 1890 and 1920. The topper still has the original ring. This topper weighs almost 8 pounds and is 9" tall x 7" wide(nose to mane) The bottom that attches to the fence or post is flanged. The opening is 2-1/2" in diameter and the flange above the opening is approximately 4" in diamter. The piece shows some age but still a beautiful piece of metal work. It mounts on a double pipe post. It is 3-1/4" in maximum height; has maximum measurements at base of 3-1/8" x 1-3/4" and has an inside diameter of 1" at bottom openings; and top opening is about 1-1/4" in inside diameter. Straight off the farm of the Missouri Foot Hills. An Antique Horse Head Hitching Post Topper. There was a pair at one time, the mate was stolen. This one that is left has been around for 4 generations. Made from Cast Iron, this piece has a single seam down the middle and and signs of hand forging on the face and neck. Its details are so beautiful and the Horses Mouth holds the ring that once tied off horse reins. This relic would make a fine piece of Art to display in your home on a coffee table or Book Shelf. The bottom once was connected to a pole and the fragments of the welding can still be seen on the bottom(picture 6) There is a piece of cast that makes it rock a little when pulling or pushing. The piece is very heavy and stands up fine as is. The base has a very nice zig-zag design to add character and make it even more interesting ... moreas a piece of architectural salvage. Size: 9 7/8" tall. Base- 4 1/4" Nostril to neck- 7 1/4" 3 1/4" wide, ring- 3 3/4" VERY HEAVY! Condition: The iron appears to have the original finish on it. This rare piece is very unique. I don't know where my Mother-in-law bought it from. Though she did frequent Estate Sales for most of her life. It is some type of cast metal, though I don't know what, it is not magnetic. I assume it is either a Greek Woman or Goddess or even possibly a Roman Woman. I tried to research by the manner of dress however, the Laurel leaves on her head lead me to believe she is Roman, but the clothing style looks Greek. She has a very attractive and regal face. Set of 4 Original Vintage Cast Iron Fence Post Tops Finials Farm Used Barn Find O.K. So I spent a whole day this week shopping for you and came home with a truck-full. Then, I went to an antique liquidation barn sale– Brrrrr was it cold, but so worth it. Then, I stopped by an auction just in time to get most of my favorites– boy, I’ve been busy! I’m so excited to show you what I have! Lots of antiques; primitive to retro to deco to Victorian pretties, advertising, Americana folk art and just cool stuff. I’ll take me a white to list, so be sure to keep checking! What a find! It's 4. Original farm used and barn found old cast iron fence post finials- aren't they gorgeous? With a round sphere top that measures 2" diameter, and a body that is 1 7/8" wide, each on is 6 3/4" tall to the flat part of the bottom- that does ... morenot include the back part that juts out about another 1/2" Each one weighs 2 lbs a piece- so they are pretty hefty too. They are in excellent solid and sturdy condition overall. You can see that one still has an old rusty nail at the top that sticks out of the side- see photo 7 and photo 10 at the top. The others just have the hole at the top as they no longer have their screw/bolt. I'm not completely sure what that hole/screw is for, as I cannot figure out how they would have been attached to the fence post- I'm not too mechanical, so I'm thinking you already know. The bottoms are solid, not hollow, and there's no screw holes at the bottom. Because of the part that juts out at the bottom too, they do not stand on their own- I have them leaning in my photos. As you can see in my photos, they have had at least two generations of paint(you see lots of it on the less exposed insides of the bodies, and some have more than others, see my photos) but I'm guessing more. I see white, and I see dark green, but only in spots on the inside- and I mean small spots- on the outside, it's pretty much all iron that you see. There's surface rust that can be seen a
