VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION! Large Cast Iron. Not cement or molded plastic black lawn jockey. One hand is extended to hold a lantern or a ring to hitch a horse. This style is called"Jocko" or the"Faithfull Groomsman" and it's legend states that they were originally ordered made by retired President George Washington to commemorate Jocko Gaines. An African-American who died guarding General Washington's horses before the Battle of Trenton. I just read that these statues were used to mark locations of the Underground Railroad. Today. The replicas are made of cement or polycast plastic. Only a guess, but I think this statue is at least 60- 70 years old, it may be much older. There is scrollwork throughout. The window gate is in very good condition overall. Although the iron piece at the very top is partially detached. The piece is completely hand heated and wrought by hand and made with an abundance of very ornate detailing and made by a true blacksmith. it is made from very thick iron. These are some of the best items; yet to be found! These two Large and Small Steel or Iron Baskets are very old! The size of the baskets are as follows. Large is 14 1/2 inches wide in the basket and 9 3/4 inches wide( square) depth is 9 inches to the hinge of the handle.The handle is 10 inches wide at the spot to hold and down 8 inches to the hinge. Small is 10 1/2 inches wide in the basket and 7 1/2 inches wide( square) depth is 7 1/2 inches to the hinge. The handle is 8 inches wide at the spot to hold and down 5 inches to the hinge. Made in southern IL in the early 1900s. Approximately 9" x 4" x 3" They can be used as conversation pieces inside or out. Door stops. Book ends, garden stepping stones, inserts in other materials in a project for accents, etc. Or just be conventional and lay them in a patio or driveway. Dry laid so there is no mortar or cement to remove as many of the pavers of that era suffer from. Cleaned with no chemicals used on them. You can't find the rich patina that has ... moredeveloped on these pavers on the newer machine made ones out there. Adds to any fine garden collection from back in the day.
