Before produce growers and distributors started using cardboard boxes to ship their goods to market in the 1960s. Fruits and vegetables were(and occasionally still are, by smaller growers) shipped in inexpensive wooden crates and adorned with beautifully crafted labels. Packers made an effort to display their produce with colorful and attractive labels in order to generate more business at the local market. These colorful labels were pasted onto wooden crates and shipped all over the nation for nearly 70 years. In the late 1950's labels were no longer used because preprinted boxes replaced the older wooden crates. The leftover labels were gathered up by collectors. Dealers, and old orchard owners. The image area measures 24.5 x 32.5 cm[9-3/4" x 12-3/4" And the map has an attractive ornamental border. There is wonderful detail throughout, and the coverage area extends from Guadalupe to Point Loma, east to San Bernardino. It also shows the offshore islands, including San Miguel and Santa Catalina. The map locates the Petroleum Oil Mountains in Ventura County and labels"Remarkable Oil Springs in the Sea" at Point Sal. Santa Barbara County. Drilled oil wells would appear in this area soon after this map was printed, and during the 1890s well drilling moved offshore into coastal waters via piers. These wells are the first known to have been ... moredrilled offshore from piers for purposes of oil extraction. The map also locates a copper mine west of Lancaster and shows wagon trails.
