One of the few marvelous cartes created by artist Jo Mora. This pictorial masterpiece gives an astonishing amount of Los Angeles history on one sheet. Packed around the edges of the actual landscape is a tour of history and geography that starts at the foundation of the pueblo and extends to a look to the future of 1950. Included are the costumes and names of the original pobladores, neophytes, Franciscan brothers and Native Americans he calls"gentiles. Mora cleverly conveys the population growth as ladies in period costume blowing up larger and larger balloons, expanding from 44 souls to one and half million. He also mentions agriculture and the arrival of oranges, limes, silkworms and Belgian Hares to the city of the angels. Even cataclysms like the depression and earthquakes seem kind of fun coming from the pen of Senor Mora. The actual map of the city floating in the center of all this history covers from the San Fernando Valley to Pasadena. Down the coast from Malibu to Seal Beach and from the Harbor at San Pedro all the way up to movie studios in Burbank. Vintage 1928 JO MORA Whimsical Map of San Diego w/ Envelope - ORIGINAL Carte
Here's an original copy(NOT a reproduction! of Jo Mora's Whimsical Map of San Diego. Printed in 1928. Only 2000 copies of this map were printed, after which the plate was destroyed, making this one of the rarer of the Mora cartes. This particular copy is in very good condition, with folds intact except for one very small hole at a fold corner(see pic) and a very slight amount of wear along the folded edge that's exposed when the map is fully folded. None of the folds are split. The colors are bright, and all imagery is fully intact. You also get the original envelope that the map was shipped in, and which it's been stored in for decades, unused. The envelope itself is fairly tattered and split(see pic) but the printing on it is intact, and could potentially be cut out and affixed to the back of a frame, should you decide to ... morehave the map framed. Color of poster is strong. There is splitting to some of the fold marks. Down the top center it comes 5 inches down fold then makes a left tear for 1 1/2 inches. also 3 pen size holes down the center where the fold marks are. worst is along the top right edge where there is a little more paper loss and some small holes. All could be restored if put on linen. Poster dated 1928 and was put out by Marstons department store. Measures 24 by 29 1/4 inches. When folded and shipped measures 7 1/2 by 12 inches. Original JO MORA California Map Mounted With Bamboo Frame Dated 1927
Offered here is a framed early California map measuring 29X36X1" It has a few areas where the poster or print is missing a little of the subject matter. I have pictured them. The frame is Bamboo or Rattan. The backing of the map is coming off but I left it alone. This would look so nice in a home with mission style or early California mid Century. Jo Mora Yosemite Carte 1949 (3rd Printing) of 1931 Yosemite National Park Map
Famous color pictographic map/ poster(carte) of Yosemite National Park. By Joseph Jacinto“Jo” Mora. This is a 1949 3rd printing of this design, despite the 1931 copyright date. The first printing was done in black and white and hand colored by Mora in 1931. The 2nd was printed in color in 1941 with minor design changes, and the 3rd in 1949 with the additional minor change of the horseback rider in the upper left quad facing away from the valley. I have read that these cartes were originally sold folded in envelopes. And this one shows those fold lines. This particular map was found inside an old true adventure book about finding gold in Yosemite, so it was not displayed and the colors are not faded. Condition is good, but there is some wear through in places and fraying along the fold lines as shown in the photos. It will display well once ... moreit is inside a frame. Size is approximately 19 3/4 inches tall by 15 7/8 inches wide. It will be mailed folded in an envelope.
