Large Ancient Greek Daunian Painted Pottery Bull Bowl - 500 B.C.
A large. Rare, ancient Italic Daunian bowl dating to approximately 500 B.C. The piece is decorated with a cruciform effigy internally. With geometric and angular motif around, rendered in black and umber. In between the looped handles on each side are pairs of large pointed horns, perhaps indicating a ceremonial function. Many cultures, including the Greeks, revered bulls for their strength and virility. Daunia was a historical region in southern Italy about which little is known. Unlike the Apulian Greeks. The Daunian potters were, on the whole, more influenced by native Italic ceramic traditions. Despite their great beauty. Daunian pottery has been little studied, relative to other ceramics from the region. Condition: Very good condition. Restored from large fragments. Diameter including handles: 13 1/8 inches. Height: 3 5/8 inches. Provenance: ... moreEx. Ancient Indian Gandharan Greek - Buddhist Schist Head
An Ancient Gandharan schist head of a man. Dating to approximately 300 A.D. A beautiful. Genuine piece of Gandharan sculpture, depicting the head of a man, the elegant features sensitively rendered, with almond eyes, gentle smile and with hair tied in an elaboratley carved turban. So-called Gandharan Sculpture was produced in parts of modern-day India. Pakistan and Afghanistan from the first century A.D. In the second century B.C. these areas were ruled by the Graeco-Bactrians, the farthest flung people of the Greek World, who brought with them the beautiful Hellenistic Greek Artistic tradition. This tradition became incorporated into the art of the region, resulting in a kind of"Graeco-Buddhist" Art from the 1st to the 3rd Centuries A.D. persisting for centuries later.
