Central Greece, Tanagra, ca. 3rd Century B.C. She is wraped in an elaborate drapery and a petasos hat. Repaired from several original pieces with break lines visible. Hat and base partially broken. The ovoid vessel on a short, stepped foot, with a long waisted cylindrical neck, rimmedtrefoil mouth and high arching handle, white slipped and decorated in red and yellow, with a band of laurel on thebody, a broad band of yellow wth a red net pattern above, a band of key on the shoulders, a band of yellow above, vertical lines on the neck and short lines below the rim. Measurements: 9-3/8" in height.

The decoration consists of two painted handles on both sides of the bowl that are designed to imitate metal-ware handles. A circular area near the bottom of the bowl and the stem connecting the foot to the bowl are both left unslipped. Measurements: 2-15/16" in height x 4-3/4" in diameter.

Beautifully painted decoration of a festival scene. Delicate appearance, the piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The painted decoration depicts a youth shown nude, wearing only a ring of charms from his shoulder, kneeling and raising a ritual wine cup(skyphos) swirling tendrils border the scene. The shape. Style and subject of this beautiful vessel reflect strong Attic influence. Attic wares with scenes of children have long been thought to have been connected with the Anthesteria celebration, an Athenian festival held in late February in honor of Dionysus. The Anthesteria was an important festival to celebrate ... morethe maturing of the wine, which was opened on the first day and then consumed during various rituals. Amongst these was a drinking contest organized for the young boys, adorned with charms(as shown on this vessel) who drank from small jugs specially presented to them for the occasion. Measurement: 4" in height.
