Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. Charles Scribner's Sons(1955) 248 pages. Except as noted immediately f

$39.58 Shipping Location: NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom Etruscan Black Terracotta Chalice Bucchero ware c 600BC 14.5 cm tall 13.5 cm top rim diameter This piece is a real puzzle as it is a Etruscan chalice ... moreand typical for the shape and method of production ie grooves etc and the black finish over terracotta body The big puzzle is how it landed up in a pit, to be found in 1890 in Nottinghamshire in the Balderton area near Newark The calling card that came with the piece is definitely 1890 in date and describing this piece. All I can think off is that it was collected earlier in 19th century, or before and discarded. Am not sure this ware was traded into Britain at the time of its production. It did come from a large eclectic collection of quality antiques from estate Condition - see above Postage Worldwide Returns accepted .

Etruscan bucchero vase with warrior and horse decoration, ex. German collection
Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 An Etruscan 6th Century BC bucchero ware pottery chalice or stemmed cup. The side of the vessel is moulded with a scene depicting warriors. Chariots and horses. 10.9 x 12.4 cms. The vessel is ancient but the surface has been coated in some horrible black paint to disguise the erosion and surface damage- the original surface is clearly visible in many places including the majority of the inside of the vessel.
