The seal of"Raku" is stamped on the bottom. The term of" Raku" was derived from the site where clay was dug in Kyoto in the late 16th century and is found in Kanji character meaning"enjoyment" or"ease. For 15 generations it has been the title and seal used by a lineage of potters whose work formed the central tradition in Japan. This lineage believes that'Raku' refers to the potters who use the technique. Not the technique itself. In 16th century. The first of these potters, Chojiro is said to have come under the patronage of the Japanese tea master, Sen-No-Rikyu. According to legend. In 1598, the ruler, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, after Chojiro's death in 1592, bestowed upon his adopted son, Jokei, a golden seal with the written symbol"raku. Both the name and the ceramic style have been passed down through the family to the present. After the publication of a manual in the 18th century. Raku ware was also made by numerous workshops in and around Kyoto: by amateur potter tea practitioners and by professional and amateur potters around Japan. Raku ware marked an important point in the historical development of Japanese ceramics. As it is the first ware to use a seal mark and the first to focus on close collaboration between potter and patron. Other famous Japanese clay artists of this period include Donyu(1574-1656) Hon-Ami Koetsu(1556-1637) and Ogata Kenzan(1663-1743) SHIPPING COST

Ancient Cypriot Early Bronze Age Black Topped Red Ware Bowl - 2400 BC
A charming. Genuine and highly decorative early Bronze Age Cypriot bowl, dating to approximately 2400- 1900 B.C. The bowl of classic form. Hand crafted and with a rounded base. An abstracted depiction of a human face with pierced eyed is appliquéd to the outer rim. The two tone black topped red ware has a striking visual effect. And as a technique it seems to have been used by a number of very different early Bronze Age workshops. Width: 5 3/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex collection of Mr J. Davies. Gifted to Mr Davies in the 1950's by a member of the Cypriot government and legally exported to the UK, remaining ... morein the family until 2011. Ancient Greek Apulian Black Glazed Ware Cellar Salt Pot - 400 BC
An ancient Greek Apulian black ware salt pot. Dating to around 400 BC. Black-glaze ware is sometimes viewed as the utilitarian pottery of the ancient world. Used by households across the social spectrum. Yet this wonderful salt pot, so calm and composed, doubtless crosses the boundary into a form of ceramic art. With a circular raised foot, bowl body and wide, rounded mouth, exhibiting a wonderful black glaze throughout. Black Glaze ware was widely used throughout the Mediterranean. Its elegant form and versatile nature made it incredibly popular in the households of the ancient classical world. Apulia, with its numerous Greek colonies and strong Greek influence, was no exception. This lovely, artistic piece speaks to the impact of Hellenistic culture across the classical Mediterranean. Height: 2 ¼ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored ... moreand with excellent glaze preservation. Provenance: This piece is from a large number of antiques. Purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all exhibited at London department store Fortnum& Mason, approximately 15 years ago. Ancient Greek Black Ware Pottery Pyxis Lid Ostracon - 350 BC
A fascinating and rare ancient Greek black ware pyxis lid. Inscribed with Greek writing, possibly used as an Ostracon. Dating to approximately 350 BC. From the early 5th Century. Several ancient Greek city states began an annual ritual allowing the people to vote a member of the political elite into exile. Voters would be invited to scratch the name of those they felt were no longer fit for office onto a sherd of pottery. The sherds were then collected and counted and the individual who had received most votes could then be exiled for up to ten years. These sherds were known as Ostraca from which the modern term, ostracize' is derived. This artefact is the lid of a pyxis. An ancient Greek type of cosmetic box. The underside has been incised, possibly with the name of a powerful politician from the period. A truly fascinating piece. A ... morevery personal remnant of early democracy. Diameter: 3 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good. The lip restored from large fragments. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired in the 1990's. Please note: This is a genuine ancient Greek artefact. Cypro-Archaic Period) DIMENSIONS: 8 cm(3.1 in. tall. 18.5 cm(7.2 in. wide at the handles DESCRIPTION: Intact. A large ceramic Cypriot bowl in typical black on red ware of the Cypro-Archaic period. The vessel has a deep shape with broad mouth and rests on a well formed flat base. There are two small handles at either side. Each rising very steeply to just below the rim and with a vertically placed slit opening, probably for suspension. On one side of the interior are a group of small black smudges, possibly the potter's fingerprints. These include a band covering the upper side of the handles and continuing down to meet with ... morea pair of broad bands encircling the vessel's exterior mid-section. A thin band covers the interior lip of the bowl and the interior center is decorated with an arrangement of two thick bands with five narrow bands between and a single broad band with a small circle at center in the bottom. Some rubbing to the slip on the exterior and bits of lime encrustation on the interior. PROVENANCE: Property from an English deceased estate. Ex Bonhams. London. COMPARISONS: Typical of Cypro-Phoenician shapes of this period but definitely a local product. For a good review of Cypro-Phoenician pottery types. See Glenn E. Markoe, Phoenicians.
