Publisher: Penguin Books; 1978) The acknowledged master of Greek comedy. Aristophanes brilliantly combines serious political satire with bawdiness, pyrotechnical bombast with delicate lyrics. Aristophanes(447-385 B.C. a contemporary of Socrates, was the last and greatest of the old Attic Comedians. Only eleven of his plays survive, and this volume contains five. Included in this collect are"The Birds" the most graceful of his plays. Also"The Knights" his venomous satire on the behavior of Cleon, one of the most famous of Athenian demagogues. Peace" which was inspired by the hope of peace with Sparta in 421 B.C. Last, The Assemblywomen" about sexual equality, and"Wealth" Birds differs from all other fifth-century plays of Aristophanes that survive in having no strong and obvious connection with a topical question of public interest. Whether political, literary-theatrical or intellectual-educational. It has, in its own way, plenty of topical and satirical content; in particular as the city of Cuckooville begins to take shape, it proves in many ways to be a replica of Athens, and is soon visited by many of the less desirable elements of the Athenian population. But satire is kept firmly subordinate to fantasy; and as fantasy Birds h

CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Byzantine Macedonia Engraved Silver Ring. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Constantinople) Twelfth Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 7 1/4(U.S. Diameter: 19mm x 18 1/2mm(outer dimensions) 18mm x 17mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 12mm(height) 12mm(breadth) Fixed Width 2 1/2mm Band. Weight: 2.20 grams. CONDITION: Very Good! Completely intact. Moderately light wear evidenced consistent with ancient usage. Very faint porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A very well preserved silver ring circa 9th or 10th century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very handsome and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring bears a very distinct abstract design, however though we’ve scrutinized the engraved design carefully, we’re unable to determine what it represents. Some believe it to be the abstract representation of a shaman’s face. However it seems most likely to be the abstract representation of two stags with antlers locked in combat. Given the cultural popularity of such depictions in the region during the ancient and medieval world, this seems most likely. This is a fairly light weight ring, more like a contemporary ring than the thick and lumpy rings often produced during the early years of the Roman Empire. It is a very handsome and complex design, and probably was a very significant personal possession of whomsoever originally owned the ring. There are unmistakable indications that the ring was worn fairly often by whomsoever the ancient owner was. But the ring is in no way“worn out” Before expressing dismay over the fact that the ring evidences some wear, you must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer wit
