SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 213 millimeters(8 1/2 inches) Thickness: 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) CONDITION: Exceptionally good– almost perfectly preserved. A little wear consistent with any household item which is close to two centuries in age. The customary blemishes inherent in hand production of porcelain– warts and dimples. Zits and pits. Not flawless, but certainly in a very good state of preservation. DETAIL: A splendidly preserved three color wall plaque so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming and early Qing Dynasty artwork. Somewhere in the dim mists of ancient Chinese mythology. The dragon came to represent male virtues; and the female counterpart, the“dragon’s bride” came to be the phoenix bird. This theme of dragon and dragon’s bride, or phoenix bird, became an extremely popular motif during the Ming Dynasty(14th-17th century) especially in decorative arts such as porcelain vases, bowls, etc. This very large wall plaque continues this theme, with a very handsome and clear depiction of the a classic mythological ancient Chinese dragon. The dragon symbolizes the Chinese people and the people from Chinese origin considered themselves. With a certain amount of pride, descendants from the dragon" According to legend, this ancestral dragon was a creature with a deer's antlers, a camel's head, the eyes of a hare, the neck of a serpent, the teeth of a crocodile, claws of an eagle, paws like a tiger, and the ears of a buffalo. This mythical creature was capable of ascending to the heavens, and descending to the depths of the sea, and was able to morph from its dragon form into other forms. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Well Preserved Genuine Ancient ... moreEarthenware Impressed Jar/Vase BC500. CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar/Vase. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Zhou Dynasty. Spring and Autumn Period(770 to 476 B.C. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

Acclaimed both by critics as well as the general public– the story of one of the most significant finds ever of Paleoanthropology. 409 pages. Publisher: Simon and Schuster; 1981) When Donald Johanson discovered a partial skeleton. The book reveals the controversial change Lucy makes in our view of human origins, and provides a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of the entire history of paleoanthropology; as well as the eccentric, colorful characters who are and were a part of it. In January 1979. Johanson’s startling“official” announcement of his discovery of Lucy(which is how the world knows her, from the Beatle’s song“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” even though her scientific name is Australopithecus afarensis) was an event that captured headlines, catapulted a young, relatively unknown American paleoanthropologist into international acclaim, and created a spirited, ongoing controversy among experts; including most notably Mary and Richard Leakey, in this wonderfully enigmatic field of fierce rivalries and astonishing breakthroughs. A stamped Greek terracotta Amphora handle, Rhodes, ca 3rd - 2nd century BC
A stamped Greek Amphora handle. Rhodes, ca 3rd- 2nd century BC Of fired terracotta. With stamped impression positioned at the top of the handle, circular in form stating merchant name and featuring the central motif of a rose- symbol of Rhodes. In Greece. Manufacturing of commercial amphorae began in the 8th century B.C. and the systematic stamping of amphorae began at the end of the 5th century B.C. Stamping probably started because of the wine quality standards demanded by Athens during this time but only the amphorae used for transportation were stamped. A series of Rhodian stamps started to appear in the 4th century B.C. and lasted until the 1st century B.C. As in other city governments. The manufacturers from Rhodes had their own symbols, namely, the rose pattern signifying the city(such as this example) the sun God Helios or the name ... moreof a month from the Rhodian calendar. Generally stamped before firing, these stamps were further used as capacity documents stating the weight for harbour taxes, the merchant and customers, and the manufacturing/filling date according to the Rhodes calendar. The Rhodian amphora stamps could also show the route of exportation from the mainland to the various colonies and settlements in the Mediterranean. Condition: Fragment originally from a transportation amphora. The handle itself is intact with very fine stamped impression. Custom mounted.
