Condition: Used Location: Reading, United States Antique Wooden Machinist's Tool Chest in Great Condition I'm no expert on these chests. But this has to be very old. It had been leather covered ... morewhen new, because I can see the evidence of the leather in several places. Picture#11 shows the leather still remaining at the top edge of the chest. The dimensions are: Length- 19" Height- 14" Depth- 9" This is the wood box dimension, without adding for the hardware. The lock and latches are Eagle Lock Co. Terryville,CT. There is no key. The handle has to be the original leather covered one and the leather is not in good shape, but it certainly fits with the age of the chest. All of the latches, hinges and lock are complete and work fine, except for the missing key. For those of you who know more about this. I'm sure you can identify the brand from the drawer knobs and diamond shaped back plates on them. I'm sure it has been sanded and finished, probably at the time the leather was removed. Although the wood surface probably wasn't original, it looks like pine to me, and looks nice with the varnished surface. Please email me with any questions you might have. While every detail is careful executed in the manner of the original works. We believe this piece was actually crafted nearly one-hundred years after the period during the mid-to-late 19th Century. It features a fine two board top, the majority being a single solid plank with only the last few inches at the back being crafted of a second joined board, the grain selected carefully and quite fine. The edge has a carved quarter-round molding of the solid, scalloping at each front corner, projecting generously over the chest. Three small drawers rest above the deeply serpentine apron, each joined front and back with fine scored dovetails, the bottom deeply chamfered and rabbeting into the sides, period Queen Anne hardware on each drawer face. The apron around the entire table is noteworthy: bold. Flowing, inspiring, the overall flow of the skirt gives incredible lift to the table. It gives robustness to the form, the lines active and dancing, the table looking poised for action. The three-scrolled form of the apron matches the trifid form of the foot, almost matching it's proportional flow. The legs are carved of a single solid piece of walnut from the table top to the foot, the sides of the table tenoned into the top of the leg and pegged symmetrically before curving in bold knees over fine cabriole form. Scottish chest, Circa 1890, Flame mahogany, Barley twist columns, Large drawers, Turned wooden knobs, Mother of pearl inlay, Age splits to top, Consistent wear throughout, One knob broken, Overall very sturdy, This flame mahogany Scottish chest of drawers was made around 1890. We purchased it in England and imported it to our antique furniture store in Atlanta. GA. This hand made chest displays all of the wonderful characteristics that make Scottish chests so popular and useful. There is a"not so obvious" drawer at the very top over three deep, serpentine front drawers over three long drawers providing a huge amount of storage. The barley twist columns on either side give some elegance to the simple lines of this chest. The drawer pulls are a turned wooden knob with a mother of pearl inlay in the center. One of the knobs is missing about a quarter of the knob, but the mother of pearl inlay in the center is intact. All drawers are joined with hand cut dovetailed joints. All of the drawers also have locks but there is no key for this chest. The top of the chest has a few cosmetic age splits and there is consistent wear throughout the chest. This wear is mainly superficial surface dings etc. Overall the chest is quite sturdy and in good condition for its age. It would make a warm addition to any home or office. The seven drawers provide a huge amount of storage space. The barley twist columns are a wonderful addition to this elegant look. The turned knobs have a mother of pearl inlay. The drawers feature hand cut dovetails. You can see an example of some of the wear around the bun feet. The top of the chest has some minor age separations. This close up better shows the minor age separations in this part of the top.

Retaining it's original oval pulls, these with roses embossed inside an infinite double loop and entirely untouched feet, this is a particularly desirable object for collectors. The concave crown molding is bold, aggressively projecting over the unembellished case of three small drawers over five graduated full drawers. The sides of the case extend through the feet, making the interior blocking of the feet an integral part of the case and something permanent- much of the reason the feet have survived in such extraordinary condition. The backboards are untouched and typical of the period with neat rows of square forged iron nails affixing the backboards to the case. Each drawer is of fine craftsmanship. The tidy hand dovetails crisp and perfect, the pine plank bottoms chamfered on the sides and front to be set in grooves along these edges; all drawers are tacked at the back edge with three hand forged nails. Protecting the contents of one drawer is a full dust board, the other drawers with partial dust boards over the first one-third. Flanking the drawers are the deeply fluted Corinthian columns with turned bases and caps so commonly found in chests of this region. As a well preserved and absolutely stunning object of Early Pennsylvania. Particularly interesting for the meld of Federal and Chippendale designs and it's very fine craftsmanship, this is an outstanding investment grade work of art that was built to last and if well cared for will last long beyond our lifetimes. They stand out from the dresser and chest of drawers like wood carvings. Very functional art. Each drawer is solid wood and of dovetailed construction. The top is laminate. It is a wonderful retro ensemble. The Dresser works well as a buffet and the mirror is easily detached. The furniture is solid. Sturdy and not overly large.
