Vintage Japanese Cast Iron Teapot Kyusu Tetsubin Kettle Arare Hobnail w/Strainer
This Japanese teapot(sometimes referred to as a kyusu) is constructed of black finished heavy cast iron in a raised hobnail pattern known as"arare" With an enameled interior. It has handled lid also in the hobnail pattern, and a a useful moveable handle. Comes with a well fitting and removable metal strainer basket for tea leaves. Maker's mark in kanji characters is somewhat visible but worn to the point of being mostly illegible. As it was a estate sale find I am unsure of the teapot's exact age, but definitely vintage and of Japanese make. Teap ot measures roughly 2 1/2" tall. With 4 3/4" diameter and 15" circumference at widest point. Although visually similar the pot's strainer and presence of an enameled interior rather than one of exposed iron is what makes it a kyusu rather than a tetsubin. Kyusu ... moreare used for brewing tea while tetsubin are primarily for boiling hot water. Tetsubin also generally being larger in size. Teapot has not been cleaned. It arrives to you with it's patina as found. It has an aged look, some rusting along most of the handle, at top edge of pot rim. And spout end. The handle has a painted black design of leaves and stems which has started to wear off, but can be seen(faintly) in photo#6, and shows up better in real life. Interior also has some enamel loss. Vintage Japanese Showa period cast iron tea kettle tetsubin SATO KIYOMITSU
Item description: You are bidding on a vintage Japanese cast iron kettle. Made by Sato Kiyomitsu, a craftsman who was active during the mid to late Showa period and won a number of awards for his cast iron work. The kettle here is made in a simple style with what I believe is a bronze lid and an intricate knob. Sato's seal is on the right side next to the spout. The interior of the kettle is basically rust free, and has a shiny gray coating on it. The exterior of the kettle is rust free. Condition: As mentioned. There's a very small amount of rust on the interior, as is fairly normal. The interior is covered with a surface coating/treatment of some sort. The exterior is rust free. The knob turns freely, as is normally the case. Size: From tip of spout to the other end is about 7" Diameter of the body itself is about 6" Lid ... moreis about 3.5" From base to the top of the handle is about 9" Item weighs about 1.7kg. The pot comes with an infuser and does not appear to have been sued much, still has the original price label of $75.00 on the bottom as show. It does have a Japanese character mark but I have not been able to identify the maker. CONDITION- The pot is in very fine. Vintage, pre-owned condition! Or tetsubin teapot, became common in Japan around the time Sencha Green Tea was introduced between the 17 th and 18 th centuries. But originally. These Japanese tetsubins were used for boiling water, often left over the fire to keep the water hot so a cup of tea could be made at any time. Soon after, drinking loose leaf teas became popular and the Japanese cast iron teapot was a household necessity.
