East Indies: Dutch Fort at Banda (Java), from Prevost's "Voyages" (1746-59)
This 18th century engraving has rather an illustrious"team" behind it. Abbe Antoine Francois Prevost(1697- 1763) was variously a Jesuit novitiate. A soldier, author and Benedictine monk(taking holy orders, on his own admission, after an unhappy love affair) With a number of successful novels behind him, he began work on a massive 15 volume Histoire Generale des Voyages(1746- 59) compiled and translated from the writings of a wide selection of travellers and explorers. The engraving at auction here comes from the section on the East Indies, and gives an excellent picture of the Dutch defences at their post in Banda on the island of Java, to anyone pre-disposed to attack it. It is historically interesting in the way it shows how the layout of fortifications had developed by the early 18th century, with every side protected with a ... moreline of fire. In the 18th century France had taken the lead from Holland as the centre of geographical science. And Jacques-Nicolas Bellin(1703-72) who drew this plan, was one of the most gifted and prolific French cartographers of the day, rejoicing in the title"Hydrographer to the King" As can be seen here, he did not restrict himself to matters of hydrography, mapping of the seas and shore-lines, but could turn his hand to a precise portrayal of coastal defences. The actual engraving is by Jacob van der Schley(his signature appears at the bottom of the left-hand corner) Who had made a name for himself for the very fine work he had carried out on the illustrations for the 1746, French edition of Don Quixote. 1836 SDUK: Map of the East Indies - Malay Archipelago
Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of the East Indies- Malay Archipelago, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. They represent and interesting period in Britain's involvement with China and the emergence of Hong Kong as a commercial centre. Printed on thick laid paper. Fine, dark impression. Original outline color. Outer dimensions: 21 1/2" x 24 1/2" Folded along the bottom. Some browning to the very edges, otherwise excellent. Pierre Mortier of Amsterdam drew heavily on de l'Isle's maps, knowing the high esteem in which they were held. This was the first state of the Mortier edition of this map. A STREET IN CANTON. Highly decorative steel line engraving after a drawing by Thomas Allom. This series of fine plates was produced to accompany Allom's"China Illustrated" published in London 1843-47. They represent and interesting period in Britain's involvement with China and the emergence of Hong Kong as a commercial centre. Following the British invasion in 1839 and the occupation of the island. China ceded Hong Kong to Britain in 1841. The peace of Nanking in 1842 brought to an end the first Opium war and opened up the area for trade, allowing people like Allom to visit. Measures approx. 190 x 123 mm. Good condition. THIBET. MONGOLIA AND MANDCHOURIA A highly decorative map of the area issued by John Tallis. Probably one of the best known map-makers and publishers of the 19th Century. The maps were published circa 1850 and are considered the last series of decorative maps of the world, Contained within an elaborate border the maps are generally decorated with vignettes and scenes depicting particular views and local inhabitants. The present map of"Thibet, Mongolia and mandchouria" has a number of vignette views including the fortress of the Dalai Lama in Lassa and the Chinese Wall. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin while the illustrations are drawn by H. Winkles and engraved by G. Greatbach. Measures approx. 245 x 340 mm. Centrefold as issued.
