1808 Wilkinson Map- The Southern Provinces of Hindoostan Robert Wilkinson was a prominent publisher and compiler of atlases who worked from Cornhill in London in the late 1700's and early 1800's. His most successful atlases were'A General Atlas of the World' which was printed in three editions between 1794 and 1809 and his'Atlas Classica' which was first published in 1797 and continued through another three editions. This map of South India comes from a 1808 edition of that work. The list in the lower left names the British Possessions and provinces shown on the map including Northern Circars. Jacques Nicolas Bellin(1703-1772 was one of the greatest hydrographers of the 18th century. Rejoicing in the title"hydrographer to the king" Since the time of Louis XIV(the Sun King) map-making in France had enjoyed royal patronage fostering its development as an outstanding productive enterprise. By the 18 th century France had far outstripped Holland as the leading geographical centre, with mapping firmly based on scientific principles. It was the first country, for instance, to introduce"triangulation" as a surveying method. Bellin's speciality was mapping the oceans, and h is famous 5-volume"Petit Atlas Maritime" came out in 1764- being a smaller-sized version of an earlier folio edition. But with more maps. The"Carte du Golfe de Bengale" at auction here is number 34. Of volume 3, and measures ... more265 x 214mm on a double-page spread of 413 x 307mm. It is a fine crisp printing on good, thick paper. The coastal towns are pinpointed in detail from Pointe de Galle in Ceylon as far up as the Mouth of the Ganges and Chandernagor. The map was drawn before Clive had won the Battle of Plassey, and Fort William(later Calcutta) had risen to prominence. And well before France had lost out to the British in the"grab" for India's riches. A striking contrast is seen along the Malay coastline, where European incursions had hardly begun, and few place names announce themselves. India: Rare newspaper map of Lucknow, 24 Jan 1858, at the time of the "Mutiny"
This remarkable map. Surviving over 160 years after being issued as a loose-leaf supplement to The Weekly Dispatch of 24th January 1858(see red imprint in second picture, above) was drawn by Edward Weller, and was intended to help readers follow the news coverage of events at Lucknow during the sepoy Mutiny(as it was thought of, at the time) The siege of the Residency effectively began on 30th June 1857, putting the British garrison in a very vulnerable position. The Residency compound covered an area of 60 acres, and lay in the midst of a scattering of mosques and palaces which the Resident, Sir Henry Lawrence, refused to demolish, despite the cover they gave to sepoy forces. He would not be seen as a destroyer of"holy places" The situation is clearly displayed in Weller's map. even the Nawab's"tiger dens" and ... morethe Kaiserbagh(The Nawab of Oudh's Palace) Two relief operations were launched, one in September(by Sir James Outram and Sir Henry Havelock) the second in November, by Sir Colonel Colin Campbell. Their lines of advance are marked in red on the inset map, top right. As a point of interest the largest number of VCs ever awarded on a single day(24) was won on 24th November, in the final assault on the Secundrabagh(see inset Of Dil Khusha Park and route of Campbell's advance) After Campbell's successful break-through. Havelock and Outram wanted to finish the business by storming the Kaiserbagh(top left) but Campbell, realising that rebel forces were still threatening other cities held by the British, opted for a quick withdrawal. Canvas screens were put up to shield open spaces from view, and while artillery bombarded the Kaiserbagh, to deceive the sepoys that an attack was imminent, the women, children, and wounded were ushered away unseen. The rest of the British forces evacuated over the next two days, after spiking their guns. Lucknow was not re-captured by the British till 21st March 1858. South India: 1719 map by Henri Chatelain, of Paris. Folio (380 x 440 mm)
This fine. Early 18th century map of Peninsular India(from Goa, southwards) was produced at a time when French cartography was rising to prominence ahead of its Dutch, German, Italian and English competitors. Henri Abraham Chatelain(1684- 1743) came from a family of Parisian map-makers and publishers. Their famous"Atlas Historique. Ou Nouvelle Inroduction A L'Histoire" came out in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720. This one is numbered page 49 of Volume V, and is entitled"Carte Nouvelle Des Terres de Cucan, de Canara, de Malabar, de Madura et de Cormonadel" And- like all the others in the atlas- it packs a lot of information about the region into neat boxes of text- names of the lands, kingdoms and provinces, their history, topography, produce, trade and so on, together with a distance scale in both German and French ... moreleagues(or lieues) this was a time long before any thoughts of"standardisation" One box includes a list of factories(forts and entrepots) of the various India Companies of the European powers. Those of the Dutch are given special attention, being marked with flags, both in the box and on the map itself. The French were already"eyeing up" the opposition! One has to get used to antique French spelling, of course- The Ghats being written Gates or Gautes, for instance. But wild animals are pictured stalking thereabouts(lions as well as tigers) along with camel routes and elephants. One can get a feel for the hazardous uncertainty. insecurity, of life in 18th century India! It could be dangerous"on the road" The information provided in the map is based on work. By H Reland(1676- 1718) a professor from Utrecht who specialised in Asian languages,religions, and geography.

This unassuming little map(its a small octavo) was a real ground-breaker when it first appeared in Nicolo Bascarini's pocket-sized atlas in 1548. It was the first to genuinely show what India looked like. If you tried to sail around it. Prior to that, even so called"Nova Tabulae" inserted at the end of Ptolemy's"Geographa" of maps first conceived in classical times(2nd century AD, in fact) did not really capture India's true length! This one, with its surging waves, was the"real thing" It was drafted by Giacomo Gastaldi. The greatest Italian cartographer of the 16th century, who- for his skills- was awarded the title"Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice" And the atlas in which it appeared broke new ground also by printing the text in Italian, rather than the classical Latin previously ... moreused for editions of the"Geographa" see pic 5) Among place names appearing for the first time are provinces such as Orissa, Cambay, the Deccan, Goa, Bengal, while cities and towns springing to the world's attention(though not necessarily in the right places) include Delhi, Cochin, Canonor, not to mention Calecut, which lends its name to the title, and Cape Comorin. Ceylon is not left out. Here are are indicated Mahe and Trincomalee(pic 3) As he always did, Gastaldi leaves his tell-tale initial"G" in each of the four corners of the map. It was his trade-mark"logo" It is interesting to see that while place names abound on the Western sea-board, where Europeans first set up business, not much is put down on the Eastern coast. And there is something of bluff, sleight of hand,about the whole exercise, persuading the viewer that he is seeing more than is really there. Perhaps the fame of the Himalayas clouded a clear view of Northern India, for blank spaces are filled with mountains, while real mountains, such as the Western Ghats, have been left out! The map is titled L'Empire du Grand Mogol. And the coverage area extends from Kabul and Kandahar in the northwest to the Gulf of Bengal in the southeast. The image area measures 18.5 x 23.5 cm[7-1/4" x 9-1/4" The scans below give a closer look: Topography is shown in relief. And the map labels political divisions, cities, major towns, and rivers. It locates the mythical Lac de Chiamay, shown in the scan above— an enormous lake far to the northeast of the Bay of Bengal and postulated to be the source of at least four of the great Southeast Asian river systems: the Irrawaddy, the Dharla, the Chao Phraya, the Bramaputra, and the Mekong. A single-sheet(no folds) map. Scarce 1920 Post WW1: India South and Ceylon Provenance Stanford's London Atlas of Universal Geography. Whitehall Edition. London: Edward Stanford. Ltd. 12, 13, 14 Long Acre, W.C. 2, and Whitehall House, 29& 30 Charing Cross, S.W. 1. Circa 1920. These maps are all originals and are almost 90 years old. I removed them from the atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimetres(and inches) Sheet: 370 x 375(14½ x 12) Map: 484 x 338(12¾x 10) These maps are printed on one side only of fine. Smooth paper, They were'tipped in' to the atlas so it was easy to remove them without damaging them in any way. Condition The maps are in Near Fine condition. There are no marks. Grammarian, engineer and mathematician, active in the mid to late 17th century. Despite being born in France. As a young man Mallet joined the Portuguese army where he served as a Sergeant-Major. Later he was able to levy his war experience into a career as Inspector of Fortifications for Louis XIV of France. It was in this position. Where his work entailed examining and sketching various fortresses, that Mallet developed his cartographic interests. His most important work is his monumental five volume opus, Description de L'Univers. Published in 1683.
