Augsburg and Salzburg compiled by the renowned(1512-1594) Mercator first published the map for the 1585 edition of his Atlas. And this example is from the 1633 German edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Mercator's eponymous world map. Size/ Format In millimetres(and inches) Sheet: 364 x 262(14¼" x 10 ¼" Margins range from 14mm- 26mm(½" 1" The maps are all printed on one integral sheet with a fold in the center. This fold becomes nearly invisible when the map is laid flat. If the map is framed. The fold becomes completely invisible unless inspected very closely. Condition The maps are in very good condition. The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional spot or unobtrusive ... moremark in the margins of a few of the maps. The scanned images are un-edited(except for size) and are of the actual map you will receive. I've noticed that some of the scans look a little blurry or grainy. This is caused by clumsy scanner settings. The maps are very clear with crisp text.

This is a very nice large late 1950's to 1960's World Map. It is Mercator's Projecton Map that is quite large and very vivid in color. The map is 55 inches x 33 inches which is quite large when it comes to maps. It was very hard to get a picture of the whole map due to it's size. The map is in good condition and folds up well. Quercy is a former province of France located in the country's southwest. Bounded on the north by Limousin, on the west by Périgord and Agenais, ... moreon the south by Gascony and Languedoc, and on the east by Rouergue and Auvergne. Today it is divided between the department of Lot(which it makes up in its entirety) and the northern half of the department of Tarn-et-Garonne. The traditional capital of Quercy is Cahors, now préfecture(capital) of the Lot département. Jodocus Hondius(1563- 1612) One of the most notable engravers of his time, is known for his work in association with many of the cartographers and publishers prominent at the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. In 1604 Hondius bought the plates of Mercator's Atlas which. In spite of its excellence, had not competed successfully with the continuing demand of Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. To meet this competition Hondius added about 40 maps to Mercator's original number and from 1606 published enlarged editions in many languages. Still under Mercator's name but with his own name as publisher. These atlases have become known as the Mercator/Hondius series. Mercator's calculations and map designs redefined the 16th century concept of cartography and were the first to break away from the Ptolemy ... moremodel. Many of his systems of measurement. Such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments. He did not construct his first map until 1540, when he made two maps, one of Flanders and another of Palestine. These two impressive works earned him the patronage of the Emperor Charles V, for whom he construed a globe and several large scale maps. Despite this imperial patronage, Mercator was accused of heresy and in 1552 fled to Duisburg. In Duisburg he set himself up as a cartographer and began work on his revised edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. This three volume work was the first book to be called an"Atlas" after the Titan and King of Mauritania. Following Mercator's death his descendants took over his firm but languished because of heavy competition from the Ortelius firm. It was not until Mercator's plates were purchased and republished( Mercator/ Hondius) by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson that Mercator's position as the preeminent cartographer of the age was re-established.
