Compiled by Motonobu Aoo and Toshiro Eirakayu based upon the works of Japan's 18th century master cartographer Ino Tadataka, this set of two volumes contains more than 70 regional maps of Japan. Each map offers spectacular beauty and detail exhibits traditional Japanese cartography at its finest. Such atlases were compiled by order of the Shogun Tokugawa and given as gifts to his favored warlords. Further Ino Tadataka material is additionally rare as most of his surviving maps were assembled in the late 1800s by an imperial functionary and avid Ino collector. They were subsequently stored in the Royal Palace archives which were themselves, tragically, destroyed by fire in 1912. There are two different versions of this atlas. Though both have the same maps, one is a deluxe" edition, is larger and printed on heavy paper. The other is printed on very thin paper and is physically thinner. This is the"deluxe" edition. Book of Japanese woodblock prints, possibly Meiji, birds, nature themes, color
Book of Japanese wood block prints Birds and nature scenes with color Imported by E. T. Shima. 562 Fifth Ave. New York SIZE: This paper bound booklet measures 7 and 1/4 inches by 9 and 3/4 inches. It is unpaginated. I count 44 pages but don't hold me to the math. CONDITION: Very good. The string binding is strong. There is some wear to the edges of the paper covers with some age-appropriate soiling and tanning. The interior is clean and bright. There are no torn. Loose or missing pages and no extraneous writing. There is a stamped name and address of the importer on the top of the front and back pages. CONTENT: These beautiful woodblock prints are of birds. Waterfowl, trees and blossoms. Some scenes are printed on single or half-pages and others across two. Most of the prints have color. There are Japanese characters on the front cover ... moreand a couple of interior pages. A friend familiar with the language said one set of characters refers to the Tree of Kokura(a town in Northern Kyushu) Other books like this are described as Meijii period. I can't say for sure when this book was printed. The importer. E. Torazo Shima, did business under that name for a brief period ending in 1927. I found biographical information on him that said his weathly Kobe family collected remarkable ukiyo-e prints and that he might have sold some of that antique collection in his New York store. Ukiyo-e is a genre of prints that means"floating world. The last photograph is an ad for E.T. Shima from an online history of the company by his descendant, Kotaro Sumii. I purchased this from a private library. I think it's in extraordinary shape for its age. ShipSaver. A4d7.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*53%3Ea4d7-13d1f3d7e0f-0xfb-

Book of Japanese woodblock prints Trees. Flowers, birds, border designs Black& White Imported by E.T. Shima. 562 Fifth Ave. New York circa 1927 SIZE: This book measures 8 and 1/2 inches by 6 inches. It is unpaginated by contains about 50 pages by my count. Don't hold me to the math. Though. CONDITION: Good. The cover is soiled and its blue paper cracked in a couple of places from opening. The cracks are superficial and do not go through to the other side. There is some tanning and foxing. Especially on the first and last pages and endpapers. A few pages are dog-eared. Some designs are marked in pencil with small X's. A signature in ink on the title pastedown reads: Kodai Moyoshiki, Vol. II. CONTENT: This is a book of black and white woodblock prints. Some are scenes from nature- birds. Flowers, branches. Most pages are of various ... moreborder designs and decorations, as if it were a sample book. I don't read Japanese. I had a friend look at it who knows some characters. The only word he could come up with was"ancient. You be the judge. The importer. E.T. Shima, was in business at that address only until 1927. Some other similar books described this type of work as Meijii period, which was earlier. A biography of Shima said he was from a wealthy family in Kobe that collected ukiyo-e prints. Shima may be brought those antique prints to the U.S. and sold them in his story. The history by Kotaro Sumii of what was to become the Shima Art Company is on line. The last photo is an ad for the company. Ukiyo-e means"floating world" and refers to a genre of prints. ShipSaver.

TWO JAPANESE 19TH CENTURY WOODBLOCK PRINTS
I am not an expert or even close to one on art but I took these prints to an appraiser and was told they are Japanese Woodblock prints from the late 1800's. The original artist was Harunobu. His name is in pencil on both and on one is a date 1730-1770 which is probably the date he did this piece.I was also told they were done on Washi paper and in excellant condition with fantastic bright coloring. The one of the single geisha has a strong visible bleed through which I took as a good thing. They are both 8" x 11" and one has no matt.Beautiful pieces for the collector or anyone who loves art and history. Thanks for looking at Just Good Old Stuff from The Texas Picker.

GOYO HASHIGUCHI "Ukiyo Fuzoku Yamato Nishikie" 1917 20 Japanese Woodblock Prints
GOYO HASHIGUCHI"Ukiyo Fuzoku Yamato Nishikie" 1917 20 Japanese Woodblock Prints Goyo Hashiguchi. Artist. One volume of"Ukiyo Fuzoku Yamato Nishiki-e" Japanese Color Prints" 1917-19. Approx. 14.5 x 10 inches. Original string binding with 20 woodblock prints tipped at one edge to a single folded-over page Japanese style. Twenty pages of text. Reference: Ulak& Koyama, Beautiful Shin Hanga- Revitalization of Ukiyo-e, pp32-33. After Goyo published his first woodblock design with the Watanabe Publishing House, he embarked on a three-year study of the great Ukiyoe masters, including Utamaro, Sharaku, Toyokuni, Harunobu, Koryusai, Hiroshige, Hokusai, etc. The result was a 12 volume set of reproductions, each volume containing 20 prints. This is one of those volumes. This copy is probably about as fine as one is liable ... moreto find and the prints are very fresh. The twelve volumes of Yamato Nishiki-e were originally packed tightly into a cardboard box. With the combination of Japan's humid climate and this packaging most examples kept in the original state were eventually riddled with moisture damage, foxing, mold, etc. This copy is remarkably free of any foxing or other humidity problems. The paper for the prints in this volume was intended to be on the brownish side to look more like the originals and is not part of the aging process- this is not a flaw but is probably as close as it could be to the original. As one can imagine, most copies from these volumes have been raided for the individual prints over the years- so this is a rare find. This volume contains early Golden Age Ukiyoe, about half is Kiyonobu. Other designs by Moronobu, Hoshigawa, Moroshige, Morotosa and Hironobu. Condition: Very Good state. Signed with the round red Hashiguchi seal that is appropriate for these prints. The 20 prints are in excellent condition. The cover has some minor flaws. The backing pages have occasional light marks. Fine color and impression with some beautiful oxidation of the red/orange blocks. PayPal.

Vintage Japanese Woodblock Prints Christmas Cards Hiroshige Nippon Stamps
Set of four beautiful little Christmas cards from Japan. Dated 1966-1970. These charming cards are genuine Hiroshige woodblock prints on soft old paper; made for St. Barnabas' Hospital in Osaka, Japan. They were sent from the director of the hospital to Mrs. Francis O'Bryan of Pasadena, Texas(see envelope example) during the years 1966-1970. All four envelopes with stamps are included. At one time someone(probably the recipient) had framed them; a spot of tape residue remains on one card and there is tape on all of the envelope edges. My scanner isn't large enough to scan the entire card unfolded- they are actually full sheets of watermarked paper folded into quarters; as shown they measure 4 5/8" x 6 3/4" A wonderful collector's item.
