BUDDHA: Antique Sakyamuni from Nepal. Vitarka& Varada Mudra, Bronze, early1800's If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a very interesting and handsome image of the Lord Buddha. He is solid cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The gentleman from whom I bought it said he"found" it in Nepal in the middle years of the last century. I am sure this Buddha is an excavated figure. As when I acquired him, he was heavily encrusted with dirt and deposits, which I carefully removed. There are still traces of dirt in the crevices which I did not remove for fear of disturbing the patina. In many ways this figure reminds me of Gandharan sculpture. Especially the large. Round ushisha. Or top knot, the clinging drapery, almost like a long Greek chiton and the arms extended ... morewell out from the body like many Hellenistic statuettes. But I am unfamiliar with any bronze Gandharan art. Gandhara was situated at the crossroads between east and west and thus came under a wide variety of artistic influences. Including Persian, Greek and Indian. It is reported that some of the followers of Alexander the Great settled in the region and introduced many"western"aspects of their own Macedonian culture. These can be clearly seen in the art from the area. Below is an image of a Gandharan Buddha with a long flowing chiton-like garment and a heavy round ushnisha. Like our Buddha: The Kingdom of Gandhara existed. In one form or another, for more than 15 centuries. It began as a province of the Persian Empire in 530 BC and ended in 1021 AD, when its last king was assassinated by his own troops. During those centuries it expanded and shrank, and its borders changed many times. The ancient kingdom of Gandhara stretched across parts of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan.
