A very attractive. High quality double-page map published in the 1900 Times Atlas. It measures 36cm x 47cm approx. Excluding plentiful margins. Heavy paper, horizontal centrefold as issued. The N-S coverage is from the Aral Sea to Sri Lanka. Condition is very good. The printed area is bright. Clean and very fresh; the odd faint mark and speck but very minor. Lovely printed colour. In the margins a few marks, some browning on the edges. Verso is blank except for the title; remnants of binding along the centrefold and some handling marks. China& Eastern Russia with a very early view of the NW coast of America- one of the first maps to depict this region- by Gerard Mercator was published by Joducus Hondius in the 1623 Latin edition of Mercators Atlas. A beautifully ornate map in a style highly popular in the 16th and early 17th centuries. To the left of the map is the ... moreimage of a man of Central Asia and another of an Arctic Hunter. Possibly an Eskimo. The rest of the map is full of detail both real and myth, some of which is no doubt borrowed from the writings of Marco Polo considered at the time one of the foremost expert on China and Central Asia. Overlooked by some experts is the inclusion of the NW Coastline of America important as it would be 150 years before this region was thoroughly mapped by Capt. James Cook in the 1770's. An important map showing the Great Wall of China. Korea as an Island, a very early example of the the Northwest Coast of America, naming Cape de Fortuna and the Straits of Anian. Shown also is an incomplete Nova Zembla and a host of other details. Extends west to include the Black Sea and Russia, but the primary focus of the map is Tartaria, Central Asia and Asiatic Russia. Decorative vignettes in include a nomadic tribe, tents and livestock. An early map of the region and certainly one of the most decorative of the genre. Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) was a Belgian cartographer. Claudius Ptolemaeus. Known as Ptolemy, was a Greek mathematician, astronomer and geographer who lived in Roman Egypt. An interesting map. It shows the ancient regions of Scythia and Serica in Central Asia which today are known as Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is from the 1874 edition of Stieler's Hand Atlas. Published in Gotha by Justus Perthes. The map is by the great German cartographer of the era. Augustus Petermann(1822-1878) best know for Petermann’s geographische Mitteilungen. The leading geographical journal of the day supplying the world with maps and information on newly explored regions around the world including the Arctic and Africa. His maps were certainly among the most accurate and detailed of the period and led the way to a new school of cartography often referred to as the"Gotha School. ... moreHis maps continued to be used and revised for years after his death in 1878 and his Mitteilungen continued until 2004. After 1865. Petermann was given the responsibility of the cartography for the Stieler Atlas and in coordination with other cartographers in the firm, he guided the production of the atlas until his death overseeing the designs and revisions based on recent discoveries. The publisher and date are shown on the map in the bottom margin and the name of the atlas is in the upper right corner and Petermann's name in the upper left corner. The map is not mounted nor matted, being sold as a single sheet with a centerfold as seen in the first pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 by 16 inches on a 15 by 18 1/2" page as seen in the pic with a wide margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic. This beautiful large-scale map of"Turkey in Asia- Asia Minor and Transcaucasia" was produced by Geographer to the Queen of Scotland. Alexander Keith Johnston and published in 1882 in his"Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. Johnston apprenticed to James Kirkwood& Sons, Engravers in 1820. In 1826, he partnered with his brother William in W. A.K. Johnston. He died July 9th, 1871 in Yorkshire but the business continued under his name until the late 1890's.
