Diaoyu, Tiaoyutai or Pinnacle Islands. Currently the islands, located in the East China Sea, are a source of international tensions between Japan, China and Taiwan, who each claim sovereignty. The islands have long been uninhabited and historically have been of little interested. The Japanese laid claim to the islands, along with numerous others, in 1895 and retained control until the end of World War II(1945) Following the war, the United States briefly administered them until, in accordance with the 1972 Okinawa Reversion Treaty, administration returned to thy Japanese. After the withdrawal of the United States, disputes rose between Japan, China, and Taiwan, all of who claimed ownership of the islands. Covers the entirety of Japan inclusive of Hokkaido and the Ryukyu Islands. Cartographically this map. Like most 18th century maps of Japan, harkens to the Ino Tadataka surveys of the 18th century, though this example does exhibit considerable revision. Even so, the influence of the Meiji Ishin or Meiji Restoration is evident in the form of the prefecture structure adopted in 1871. Stylistically, this map strays significantly from Edo period cartography prepared under the Tokugawa Shogunate, and, though issued early in the Meiji period, exhibits considerable western, particularly British, cartographic influence. One curious aspect of this ... moremap is that it appears unfinished. Various empty cartouches appear throughout the map but are empty and no specific area is textually identified. This unusual omission may stem from a politic decision to discontinue the map in anticipation of further revisions, or simply suggest that the completion of the map was interrupted for other, unknowable, reasons. This is a museum-quality artifact of the Second World War, and my research has not turned up another like it. This is a very detailed map of the coast of China. From the border with Korea down to Taiwan. It shows various air and sea routes throughout this area, and there are four smaller inset maps. One thing that makes this such a fantastic display piece is its size– it is fully 31 inches high by 21 inches wide. The most important feature. However, is the six-inch high inset image of a helmeted Japanese soldier, rifle in hand! This historic map is guaranteed to be genuine.
