You are bidding on a Ridgeway large tea pot in the Peking pattern.It is a large eight sided teapot measuring 7 ½ inches from the bottom to the top edge. The lid is another 3 inches for a total of 10 inches in height. It is 26 inches around the widest part of the body including the spout. I have been able to identify John Ridgway as the maker of this beautiful Blue Willow tea pot in the Peking pattern from the Registered design mark on the bottom. It identifies it as being made December 4. 1845. There is some slight damage as expected with an item of this age: a small chip on the spout. A couple of faint spider cracks on the outside, and a couple of spots of faint crazing. The lid and handle are in excellent condition and the flow blue is bright and vibrant. This wonderful antique Chinese bamboo sewing basket is in very nice condition. The bamboo retains a warm glow and the fabric lining is most unusual. The top features two large Chinese coins and four small. Eleven glass beads. A double cobalt blue tassel with a striking clear glass circlet. The interior, both lid an d base. Are lined with patterned raw silk and finished with a coin and bead. All original, nothing added or taken away. The size is 7 inches in diameter& 3 inches high. The bamboo is in great condition. Resembling Tibetan Snow Lion figures which were based on Llasa Apso or Chow Chow dogs. It is made with fine, soft, closely knotted wool with natural dyes, very good drawing and characterful expression. The warp is tightly spun fine wool, twisted together from two strands. The stitches most commonly used by the Chinese include 1) satin stitch– which is further classified into long and short 2) Beijing stitch or French knot 3) Stem stitch; 4) Couching; 5) Chain stitch; and 6) Split stitch. All of these stitches are known in the west. Many westerners find Chinese embroidery a little over done. The Chinese satin stitch when done to perfection is exquisite in its fine detail.
