The maps have a single fold in the center. This is the first Stieler Atlas to have been printed using the lithographic method. The colors are strong and vibrant. First Edition. 1936 A very large map dissected and backed on to cloth/ linen. Bound into blue cloth case with gilt titling to the front. Scale = 1:2.500,000, with scales in miles and kilometres. Size unfolded: 74 x 101.5cm. Case size: 13.5 x 17.8cm. Beautifully detailed. Taking in Katmandu and Muzaffapur(SE) Kabul, Peshawar, and Multan(SW) Tashkent and Stalanabad(NW) and Kuldja and the Takla Makan Desert(NE) References include boundaries of India and Burma(both demarcated and undemarcated) Railways, roads suitable for wheels, other roads with pass, telegraph line, spring, well, marsh, approximate stream, heights, administrative centres, important towns and villages, ... moreplaces of archaeological interest, halting places, peak names, pass names, range names, and locality tribal names. There are 4 inset maps: the first assesses Relative Reliability of the map with reference to regular departmental surveys since 1905. Exploratory surveys, and route surveys and foreign maps; the second gives an index to countries and provinces; the third an Index to Mountain Ranges; and the fourth an Index to Main Water-Partings. This map was drawn on the eve of the Second World War. It coincides with Tibet's brief period of de facto independence(1912-1951) when it was ruled by the Dalai Lama. This map is contemporary with Giuseppi Tucci's 20 year explorations in Tibet which commenced in 1927. And shortly pre-dates the travels of Heinrich Harrer and Peter Aufschnaider. Condition: The map in Very Good condition with tanning to the paper and some patches of foxing to the linen. The case is in Good Minus condition only. With fading and marks to the blue cloth, and a small 1cm square chip to the bottom corner of the front board, although this does not impact on the map itself. Tibet, Nepal and central Asia by Henricus Hondius was published in the 1639 French edition of Mercator's Atlas. The Moghal Empire was founded in the northern parts of India by Zahir ud-din Muhammad Babur(1483- 1531) in 1526. It grew in size until the early to mid 18th century. When it slowly began to ... moredeclined in power until finally dissolved by the British in 1857. While there was not a lot of interaction between Europe and the Moghals in the seventeenth century. This important Asian empire was still of great fascination to Europe. A 1618 map by William Baffin. Based on the information collected by Sir Thomas Roe, the British ambassador to the Moghal Emperor Jahangir in 1615, was the basis for this map originally published by Willem Blaeu and re-issued shortly afterwards by Henricus Hondius& Jan Jansson. This is a very desirable map containing a wonderful title cartouche showing two Moghal figures in elaborate dress. Also of interest are the small vignettes of elephants.
